I'm hearing great things about Day's performance, but the Lee Daniels name combined with what seem to be major liberties taken with the truth are making me reluctant.

Film wasn't good enough for a performance like Andra's. Lee Daniels just can't resist melodrama and camp, and as a result the movie is an incoherent yet somewhat still entertaining mess. And the dialogue can be cringeworthy at times; I doubt a FBI agent would've said "They say her song is the curtain call for the so-called "civil rights movement".
I'll give Lee credit on this though: there's a one-shot take in middle of the movie that's legitimately great. One of the best things I've ever seen in a Lee Daniels movie.

Totally. She deserved the Golden Globe (even over Viola Davis), but the movie itself was terrible. Love seeing Regina King geeking out over Andra:
