Since a year is how long it takes the earth to revolve around the sun, shouldn’t the new year happen at the same time for everyone on earth?

The Earth spins on its axis 24 hrs a day and orbits the sun 365 day a year. When it’s spinning on its axis 24hrs a day, some places see the sunlight and some see darkness. Hence night in some areas on earth and daytime in other areas as well as time zones.

Even a ten year old knows this :gucci:

But the earth goes around the sun regardless of its rotation on its axis. So everyone on earth makes the revolution at the same time.
No, that's the reason for time zones. Each zone of the Earth makes one complete rotation to face the Sun every 24 hours.

This planet is freakin' HUGE!!!

The sun and the earth don’t give a shyt about time zones :mindblown:

When the earth makes a FULL ORBIT around the sun, it’s doesn’t matter what side it’s facing. What if the earth was tidally locked? Then what?

You're now conflating a solar day with a sidereal day. That's why it DOES matter which side it's facing since if the Earth were tidally locked, only one side would receive daylight....

Now you trying to get technical :mjpls:

If you really wanna go there, since it takes 8 minutes for photons from the sun to reach earth, the ball should drop at 11:52 instead of midnight.

That is still wrong since that's sidereal day time, not solar day time. Solar day time is based on the Sun's position relative to the Earth, not how long photons from the Sun take to get here.
