i'm not entirely sure I understand what you're trying to say.
The guy is playing a dangerous sport where it is all about contact.
He could be tackled really hard in the hand and the ring might dent his finger up completely. He could damage his finger and potentially cause a life long disability. Take the ring off during the game and then put it on after it.

Saw a dude get his finger broken in a pickup game...
Went for a steal, got his fingers caught in a dude's shirt, and it broke right above the band :huldup:
Since then, I've told most guys to take it off during games and put it on afterwards.
If your wife gets mad, ask her if that medical bill and possible ring replacement (dude I mentioned earlier had to have his ring sawed off for surgery) means more to her than some symbolic gesture.
