I read the book about this by Nick Bilton and I don't feel bad for the sentence Ulbricht got. He created a libertarian fantasy land that unsurprisingly got out of hand and so did his ego.

Went from a site to sell drugs to selling guns, poisons and human organs. Not to mention he started putting hits out on people. Doesn't matter if the murders were actually committed (five are unaccounted for from my understanding and one was staged), the intent was clear.

Somehow this guy has become a cult hero for libertarians to rally around. What a great belief system. "Let me do whatever I want without consequence and if it affects other people, so what and if I get caught, let me make excuses for my actions."

@88m3 did you read the book?

Nah but read a lot about it at the time. Spot on assessments

That book was incredible, I loved what the judge told him at sentencing. "I have never heard a defendant from the Bronx say he was trying to make the world a better place, it is arrogant, it is privileged", that truly disgusted her, as it does me.

Crime and ideology, at great extremes on the latter, don't mix.
That was my favorite quote in the book. This was my second favorite:

"Jared wanted to understand Dread's thinking and read along too. But the books were so dense that nothing he read made any sense. To him it appeared that the arguments made by the authors was a series of justifications for doing things in the world without taking responsibility for how those actions might affect other people."

Libertarians to a T. "fukk you, don't tell me what to do. I'll do whatever I want. Who are you to tell me what I can do?" Etc. They sound like a bunch of moody, rebellious teenagers.

Bilton's a great writer (his Twitter book was excellent) and everything was thoroughly presented. There's no doubt Ulbricht was the guy behind it but there seems to be a legion of people who think he was framed, it wasn't really him, etc. There's a petition with over 100K signatures from people asking for his release.

They'd probably drink poisoned kool-aid if he asked them to.

Lol thought this was about the Silk Road trade routes in ancient history

Never head of this

This guy was just as big. Imagine being able to sell and buy anything and I do mean ANYTHING on the dark web. Organs, drugs (any and all) slaves (all kinds) weapons and even a mf submarine? I did a college paper on this dude. Dread Pirate Roberts. He would have gotten off too if he had closed his laptop before they got him. He’s still a rich man too

No one was buying organs, guns or placing hits on the dark web:mjlol:
When this stuff first hit a lot of people got caught up in sensationalist journalism spinning tales about buying nukes and anthrax on the internet
I think the child pornography has some truth to it though

They had a spin-off website called the Armory for guns. :dwillhuh:

They were being sold on the main site but people complained so they made the spin-off. The main problem for it was shipping weapons without getting them confiscated so it didn't take off.

Ulbricht had recorded conversations on his computer giving the OK to selling organs on the Silk Road. :dwillhuh:

He had recorded conversations and records of transferring hundreds of thousands of dollars to kill people on his computer and asking for proof. :dwillhuh:

Go back and look at his charges. He actually put out hits on people and that was one of the things he got sloppy on. Go deeper

I didn't read the book but saw one of the exposal articles that came out after the arrest, dude was a full POS.

I have libertarian acquaintances from high school who work in the tech industry in Seattle, they were all about that guy.

But none of it actually happened
As far as I recall everyone who he contacted for the hits intended to finesse him and take his bread without doing anything
They had entire sites for hiring hitmen and they were all scams
Mfs foolishly assumed that the dark web wasn’t gonna be full of scams even though clearnet is
Federal government doesn’t give a fukk whether it actually happened though
Intent was all they needed to give him the jersey

He didn't transfer half a million dollars to have people slapped in the face.

One, the life sentence wasn't based around the ordered killings, and two, it doesn't mater if the target isn't real, or the whole thing is a sting operation, conspiracy to commit murder for the benefit of a criminal enterprise is an extremely serious charge. The life sentence was for the CCE, the killings unraveled because of the acts of the DEA/Secret Service agents who conspired to steal the money Ulbricht used for killings. He was never charged with those, if I recall accurately.
