He knew who he was. What he can and can't do. That's a certain level of Social Smarts; Sid knows he has the look of a monster, so why fight it? Why try to be someone, when facially everyone knows you are intimidating? Plus he knew that all he had to do was ramble and yell, and Audience would buy it up. There is a saying, that was applied to Rowan Atkinson, that some of the best stupid characters (Mr. Bean) are some of the smartest people outside of the character because they know play it the right way.

I've said it before, but I always thought Sid was a goof when I was a kid. Just him yelling & messing up his lines always made me think he was stupid. It wasn't until I was older and went back and rewatched his stuff that I truly appreciated the fukkery he brought
