what if Shyne never went to prison and went on to become a bigger rap icon, would he still be doing this? :jbhmm:

Artistically Shyne was too ahead of his time. The rap game hadn't came to the point of numbed out nihilism he was already at in 99 and in many ways he laid the blueprint for what would follow as so many artists took bits and pieces from his style and image to create their own thing.

That and people hated because they thought he sounded like Big (he didn't) plus his content was totally different so he'd have to iceskate uphill to convince them to listen. Solid debut album though that still gets spins to this day. If he'd manage to stay free I'd see him evolving into a conscious street poet laced with ignorance as he commented on various topics in his music.

Fantastic ear for beats as well.

I never really thought about it, but you're right about him being ahead of his time with the numbed out nihilism. Not sure how many he actually influenced, but his style was kind of unique for that era, and his nihilistic approach to street shyt was probably what made him so interesting.
It was definitely a huge loss for hip hop that he never got to continue progressing in his career. I'm feeling disappointed all over again now.

Shyne was actually a lot closer to Pac than Big in many respects including how prolific he was in a short spin and the general air of self destruction that he actually meant and wasn't just repping for an image. I think by his third album he'd have won over his critics and started making a name for himself. The joints he'd penned for his sophomore were nuts:

Just Blaze, Neptunes and Kanye before any of their waves were waving. Like I said he was a force when it comes to this rap game and his career is the ultimate hip hop "What if?".
