No. You dont get that "machine" behind you while indie. For example Mac Miller, I dont hear him on the radio, yea his album sold well but I havent seen any of his songs on the charts. If Miller was on a major right now dude would be damn near Justin Beiber status, would have endorsements out the ass and have major tours. Miller is doing pretty well for an indie but he still not where he could be if he was major. Indie is most beneficial for niche artists such as a Tech N9ne who make decent music but no matter what wont have that broad mass appeal or who is against doing that "poppy" stuff such as Lupe but even for Lupe going major was best for him because he damn sure wouldnt be as big as he is but ow that he got the fanbase he wanted by going major it affords him the ability to go indie and still make some bread.

Being indie is hard though, for starters he would have to pay producers, lawyers, features and all that shyt with his own money. He would have to hire a team with his own money. He wouldn't reign on the radio, mtv, awards and shyt. He would have to be a business man or bring a parter who is a businessman and just that split a lone is probably more than the label takes.

Basically he wouldn't be as big, get investors or get his own money, risk more of his own money,if he gets investors he has to pay investors for nothing but a loan and on. A record deal is better than indie if you are offered a great ass deal. There is a reason to why someone like Kanye didn't want to go indie now that his deal is up.

I don't know more about Drake than he shows, so I don't know if an indie career would be better. But he seem like he wants to be a pop-star like Jay, Kanye, Wayne, Eminem (which he couldn't achieve indie) and these dudes and he does not seem to be a business man he seems to be more of an artist. So based of that a major label deal was probably in his best interest.

Bruh. Mac Miller did it. And he sold 300,000 cds.

I get your point though. Some nikkas want the fame & flashing lights :manny:

No lie, aint the point in it tho? Aint music about expressing ya views and opinions to as many ppl as you can.

I dont think any artist (regardless of genre) hops into the game to become a underground cat.

Drake going major was the smartest move for him. If you have the appeal, take that leap and let the machine take you to where you wanna be.

Mac Miller is signed to a indie label though, so he's still got bosses, still got a contract with a couple of lovely jews :leon:. Best believe that the people putting up the money are taking the money as well. Maybe a bit less than a dope major label deal, idk tbh. I thought you were talking about him being indie and starting his own movement rather than signing to an indie label.

He should've got people with major label experience and worked out a new format to distribute and market himself. No doubt he could've done it. It could've changed the game...but since the hottest newcomer in years just crawled to a label why should anyone else be expected not to.

Mac might not have huge radio exposure but he's making more than even a big time major label artist anyway

I feel like if Drake had done something largely independent that he'd be the Weekend...which is kind of ironic I guess

wasn't kim dotcom supposed to come out with something that helped independent artists? or did label execs throw that in the bushes

Why u think the feds swooped in? That plus the artist endorsement video aired right before the raid sealed the deal. They weren't letting it go down.

Same way J Prince said the feds put him on their scope when he tried to form a distribution company.

u wanna see the real power of the machine being behind an artist. Looka at Luda, Scarface got da def jam south gig, signed luda n put da machine behind em. Luda had a stretch where u couldnt have a remix witout him on it. his albums were goin plat n gettin madddddd radio play. Scarface quit/got fired went 2 jail. Dj khalad got da def jam south gig, luda's contract wasnt picked up. da whole dtp roster got dumped. N now luda makin these lame tracks, gettin no air play, no tours.

Magically then sum correctional officer signed by dj khalad, got instant street cred, n top producers mkin beats for him. n u cnt go on da net, watch tv or listen 2 da radio witout hearin the name Rick Ross or hearin a Ross track.

without YMCM drake wld b doin young n da restless....if he was lucky enough.
