Now that its public information that Drake is getting his check stubs thrown in the bushes :birdman:

Was he stupid for signing with Cash Money & not taking the Interscope deal? or going independent? In 2009, Drake was the hottest underground artist since 50 Cent. With record sales down & the internet becoming a main platform, an artist like Drake going independent could've opened the floodgates, started a paradigm shift. Label execs had snipers ready though :mjpls:

Mac Miller has shown us cats can be "relevant" as indie artists & move units. Mac moved 300,000 units independently with Blue Slide Park. Imagine what Drake would've did on his own. nikka would've caked HARD :wow:

Damn Drizzy....

Sometimes I still feel like he was already signed low key to YMCMB before the "announcement" and all that. Dude had Lil Wayne, Bun B and Trey Songz On a mixtape that was basically an expertly crafted, mixed and mastered studio album:jawalrus:

But anyways, there are both pros/cons to going independent or Major. I thought that with all the clout he had coming in, he would've gotten the BEST major label, non fukked over deal possible, his manager/ lawyers should've made sure that shyt was AIR TIGHT, ESPECIALLY dealing with Cash Money, a label that didn't even want to pay the man who crafted thier entire sound properly:leon:

At the end of the day, unless Drake comes out and says "I'm getting fukked" then I guess hes happy with the situation:manny:

He was managed by Lil Waynes manager, friends with Trey Songz since years before that and Bun was probably connected through Prince Jr or Prince Sr.

Besides that he already had money from music by then, dude was one of the biggest underground deals before So far gone, specially in Canada.

If we look at other cats with money before the fame like Jeezy (even though Drake was famous before So Far Gone) he had Bun-B, Lil Flip, Trick Daddy, Pastor Troy, Lil Jon on his shyt before he blew up.

Yes I can see the argument, it's certainly not out of the realm of possibility, especially since he had connects/money from his Degrassi stint. My thing is more of the HYPE that surrounded him during that period. Sure the music was great, hell all three of his mixtapes were great in my opinion, but if there was even HALF a possibility that he wasn't going to a major I just don't see "the machine" supporting him the way they did before "the announcement" that he signed with YMCB...

Anyways enough with the conspiracy theories, I'm just flabbergasted that people are STILL doing business with Cash Money. With the way they allegedly screw over any and everyone whose ever done business with them, they should be bankrupt

it's in the legal records you can read them he was signed to aspire management for a minute but not young money until july 2009 when it was announced. look for yourself so we can put it to rest. not directed to you particularly but i'm just saying...it was brought up. he was independent as far as a label but management and publicists are almost more important for an upcoming artists anyway...they keep it on the low low ask art barr

The thing with all this people getting "screwed" is that they keep doing business with them. Bangladesh might not have received 500k but he received other millions. I remember Juve leaving Cash Money and returning for like $4 million which probably was a settlement. Lol @ $4 million for a 1 album deal.

I don't know but it's obvious that they've got a lot of smart people, specifically lawyers like that old dude who is always in the background of Birdmans interviews and stuff I think his name is Vernon Brown. But I also think that people exaggerate cause most of the lawsuits get thrown in the bushes.

Im not questioning whether or not he was signed to Cash Money.....don't care :yeshrug:

Im questioning whether it was worth signing in the first place considering Cash Money acting funny with his royalties now. Drake could've went indie & been eating. He could've been the first to go gold (maybe platinum) as a indie artist.

Being indie is hard though, for starters he would have to pay producers, lawyers, features and all that shyt with his own money. He would have to hire a team with his own money. He wouldn't reign on the radio, mtv, awards and shyt. He would have to be a business man or bring a parter who is a businessman and just that split a lone is probably more than the label takes.

Basically he wouldn't be as big, get investors or get his own money, risk more of his own money,if he gets investors he has to pay investors for nothing but a loan and on. A record deal is better than indie if you are offered a great ass deal. There is a reason to why someone like Kanye didn't want to go indie now that his deal is up.

I don't know more about Drake than he shows, so I don't know if an indie career would be better. But he seem like he wants to be a pop-star like Jay, Kanye, Wayne, Eminem (which he couldn't achieve indie) and these dudes and he does not seem to be a business man he seems to be more of an artist. So based of that a major label deal was probably in his best interest.
