Could Shenmue 3 end up looking something like this?

"Korean modder Kid Nocon began his unofficial HD remake of the original Shenmue last year, before any of us knew that Shenmue 3 would burst onto the scene and become the most funded video game Kickstarter yet.

Nocon's original efforts, in Unreal 3, look pretty great.

His latest video, though, is for a remade version of the Hazuki Residence in Unreal 4, the engine that has given us wonderfully uncanny Sonic and Mario mock ups.

Shenmue creator Yu Suzuki has noted, "I’ve been looking at a several different engines over the past three years for Shenmue III, and Unreal Engine 4’s colors fit the color of the world I envision for Shenmue." It might end up looking something like this. Hell, just hire the kid
."

S.M.B 4 EVER
Damn I was just about to donate and found out that it was closed. Glad they reach their goal. I guess dude going to have to by PS4 even though I don't want to but that's the risk I have to take to play one of my favorite game series again.

Shenmue 3 Kickstarter reveals development progress and future plans - SEGAbits

It’s normal for most Kickstarter campaigns to go silent for a bit following successful funding, mainly because those behind the campaign are now hard at work creating whatever it is you backed. Of course, in the case of Shenmue 3 which raised over $6 million, backers were more eager than usual to hear something new. Thankfully, the radio silence didn’t last too long as backers received an update last night on the development progress and future plans. Better yet, we heard it straight from Yu Suzuki himself!

In [URL='https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ysnet/shenmue-3/posts/1336892']update #44
, Suzuki revealed that composition, story, planning and the game flow have all been completed and even provided a handy chart (seen above). While it was assumed that Suzuki would be using much of what he had worked on back when Shenmue 3 was being planned for the Dreamcast and later Xbox, it appears that isn’t the case, as the story has undergone additional changes to make a more coherent flow. The most interesting part of in the interview is the mention of the chapter breakdown of the Shenmue series:

Shenmue III is based on the 11 chapters created 17 years ago, and each chapter is set in different regions. For example, the first chapter was set in Yokosuka, second was set in Hong Kong and so on. However, we cannot finish with just one chapter in one region, so I had to restructure the story to fit within the scope of Shenmue III.

Suzuki also explained that the entire flow of the game, which includes cutscenes, events, battles, and quests, have been completed and the team have now moved on to the next stage of development, which Suzuki describes as being the “actual game development”. Suzuki promised that from here on out he will give project updates monthly, and he even shared his travel plans which include a possible visit to the 2015 Tokyo Game Show and a trip to China in October to attend a game show called CHUAPP×2015 and to do some location scouting for Shenmue 3‘s development.

The interview concluded with a fun anecdote of Suzuki meeting a fan while at a restaurant, which we won’t spoil here – you’ll have to read the full interview – and an illustration of Ryo on a forklift. Make sure to read the full interview, and we can’t wait for monthly development updates on Shenmue 3 which we will of course cover here at SEGAbits.

Shenmue 3 kicks off three month PayPal Slacker Backer Campaign - SEGAbits

For those that missed out on the initial Shenmue 3 Kickstarter campaign, Ys Net has just kicked off a second campaign which is set to run for a little over three months and utilizes PayPal. Dubbed the Slacker Backer Campaign, the campaign is described as follows:

For everyone who could not participate in the Shenmue III Kickstarter, we have heard your voice! Here is one more chance to show your support and make Shenmue III even better. All funding collected here will be added to the Kickstarter total for the game’s development.

The Kickstarter stretch goals carry over, with $6.5M Battle System Expanded Ragdoll Reaction being the next game enhancement. The campaign also has a lengthy FAQ which is sure to answer those niggling questions, including “How are Sony and Shibuya Productions involved?” and “Why is the PC version of Shenmue III not offered on this website?”.

Also like the Kickstarter campaign, there are reward tiers. Some Kickstarter backers may be annoyed to learn that the exclusive game case seems to have carried over, meaning it and other rewards are no longer exclusive to the original campaign. Hopefully they differentiate between the Kickstarter case and Slacker Backer case (ideally with the words “SLACKER” written in Sharpie).

Those who have already backed the original campaign might be disappointed to learn that there aren’t that many tiers that act as add-ons for those who have already backed on Kickstarter. For $30 the Slacker Backer campaign offers up the Shenmue 3 t-shirt, which was initially only found in the $160 tier. However, the Slacker Backer announcement email did make a point to mention “Once the survey system is up and running, add-ons and upgrades will be available for existing Kickstarter backers.” So Kickstarter backers may want to hold off on the PayPal rewards as it looks like they may have additional goodies for initial backers. My hope is that they offer the physical soundtrack and art book as add-ons, as both were only available at the $175 and $250 tiers respectively.

Check out the Slacker Backer campaign page for yourself, and stay tuned to SEGAbits for future Shenmue 3 news!
