Last year he had a team that started really well, then lost its best player until the last couple of games. They seemed like they were going to collapse, then they just rallied and came together. I thought he did a great job. You could actually see development in the individual players and they played hard. One thing he talked about was how the players lacked confidence like he had never seen before. Not a super-talented group, but always played hard. They were built around Barnes' unskilled, beat em up basketball. But definitely got the most out of those dudes. Had Ridley stayed healthy, that team could have gone deep in the tourney. Ridley was playing at a high level.
This year's team is not built well. We have no point guard at all. Basically a team of shooting guards and forwards. The wing position was pretty much Tevin Mack who seems to be done with the team. The transfer they got looks like he will never play after an ankle injury that got infected. The guys running point have no confidence in doing it unless they are in the open court. Both finish well. Down low, we have an undersized senior power forward and two freshmen centers. No upperclassmen in sight. Forgot that our other senior is injured for what seems to be indefinite. The roster is just damn bad. Even with that, they are competitive most of the time, but they need some help. Every team they play has an older and more complete roster. The additions next year will go a long way towards properly filling that roster. Just hope they can get Bamba and perhaps a transfer or juco pg to be part of those additions. You will see a completely different squad next year. Then we will see if Shaka can coach or not.
The situation is just like with Strong. Came in with a decent, veteran squad and did what was about expected, but then had to gut it through two years of mostly underclassmen and almost no senior or junior talent. Even next year, Shaka will have no seniors, 2 juniors(assuming Mack is gone) and a bunch of freshmen and sophomores. That's not a winning roster unless you are Kentucky and that's hard for them.
