There was a reason the owners wouldn't open up their books during the lockout because it would show what they were doing

Nobody disputed whether the league overall lost money. The dispute was how much and by who. I don't think you need a rocket scientist to realize some squads lost a ton of money. If anything you question how some of these teams function.
