Carrying the laod and making his teammates better. You swa against LA, his shot wasnt falling but he still keptgoing to basket , had 10 rebounds and was finding the open players in that legendary fourth. How many times he found Greg Smith around basket?

Went from 6th man to a dude that is carrying a team and playing at a high level
Sure his efficiency has dropped, but so did the quality of his teammates in relation to Durant/Westbrook. He is now an all-star caliber 2 guard, could you say the same about him last year, realistically? You can even make the case for him being the 2nd best SG in the league right now with Wade still not back to form. The Rockets are 9-8, did anyone honestly see that team being above water like this, even with Harden?
The way the award works, he's the leading candidate to win it.
