Don't Believe the Hype
Senate Approves Warrantless Phone Tapping for Next Five Years
By a vote of 73 to 23, the US Senate just voted for the warrantless surveillance of American citizens until 2017.

The vote, set to affirm to eradicate the FAA Sunsets Extension Act of 2012, means we'll be living with Bush-era spy laws for another half decade. In 2007, the Senate voted to grant blanket immunity to companies like AT&T, which conspired with the NSA to monitor American digital conversations without government oversight after 9/11. Today's vote continues that immunity, and provides further carte blanche for the American intelligence-gathering apparatus. Phone calls, texts, and emails are all fair game—and a judge doesn't have to give the OK, so long as it's in the name of counterterrorism. Which is a very easy guise.

This should anger and worry you. The EFF has a nice summary of why:

The FISA Amendments Act continues to be controversial; key portions of it were challenged in a case before the U.S. Supreme Court this term. In brief, the law allows the government to get secret FISA court orders-orders that do not require probable cause like regular warrants-for any emails or phone calls going to and from overseas. The communications only have to deal with "foreign intelligence information," a broad term that can mean virtually anything. And one secret FISA order can be issued against groups or categories of people-potentially affecting hundreds of thousands of Americans at once.

The bill now goes to Obama for his signature, which it wil almost surely get—he's a vocal supporter of the legislation. Domestic spying will be a reality for the rest of his administration, and beyond.

"The program, which the Bush administration started without congressional authorization shortly after the Sept. 11 attacks, collects intelligence on Americans who are communicating abroad with foreign "targets" designated by spy agencies like the CIA and National Security Agency."

First off, let's not sanitize this. It was a crime which, after the fact, was given retroactive immunity by Congress. That included a "yes" vote from a certain Senator who had just clinched the primary and, prior to that, had agreed to vote against any bill that granted telecom immunity. He did a complete 180 and parroted the same bogus arguments from the Bush administration each and eery time this issue has come up.

President Obama has continued an illegal program. It was one he once pretended to be opposed to. We already had a good FISA law in place. It was simply broken and President Obama, along with numerous other sell outs in Congress, have helped to enable and continue that rather than end it. It's a huge black eye on all of them in addition to the nation in general.

Funny how you have to search far and wide to find this story on the MSM.............try it.........I checked CNN.com and USATODAY.com.....nothing.... no MSM has this on the mainpage, and if you type it into a search engine none of them even have this story......

So its almost understandable why most people are unaware of anything but the fantastic Bread and Circuses they get every day..... :aicmon:

People also forget about the fact that ...

Dec 27, 2012
WASHINGTON, D.C. - This evening, the U.S. Senate voted on amendments to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act Amendments Act Reauthorization Act of 2012, H.R.5949, including one introduced by Sens. Rand Paul and Mike Lee (R-Utah). The amendment, known as the Fourth Amendment Protection Act extends Fourth Amendment guarantees to electronic communications and requires specific warrants granted through FISA courts in order to obtain this information.
Prior to the vote, Sen. Paul spoke on the floor, urging his colleagues to support his amendment. The amendment failed, 79-12.

I will never ever understand how and why people focus so much on things like these and the Patriot Act.

If you aren't literally hearing the government, the hell is up with all the bytching? What is the government gonna blast your phone sex conversation for everyone in your neighborhood to hear?
