Cool little site that gives a breakdown on majority investors in alot of these companies that friends stan. I never really really realized how many hands are in the pot in alot of these companies and how often many of the same names pop up. Very insightful stuff.

Look at Google.

Friends say, hey google is doing this and that but ultimately they have to answer to their holders so they're kind of have to keep pushing out epic products. Neato.

well they follow entire indexes. so that would mean GOOG got removed from the S&P 500 or something. which isn't happening anytime soon.

I could be wrong some of those funds could have activists behind them and push a company to make changes.

I dont understand this sentence.

I dont understand this sentence.

For example those Vanguard and Fidelity funds listed in your links track the performance of major indexes like the S&P 500, the Dow Jones, or the Nasdaq.

Google is included in those indexes so these funds that track those indexes buy Google along with the other dozens or hundreds of other companies in these indexes. They don't care about the prospects of google they just buy google shares because it is a company listed on the S&P 500 index (or dow or nasdaq). These are called index funds and why I am referring to them as passive. Some fund manager doesn't sit there and pick the stocks, the stocks are picked by what is included in the S&P 500 (or nasdaq or dow, etc).

The word active would refer to someone who actively picks stocks and I'm sure some of those are included in that list of shareholders as well.

When I say activist I mean a shareholder who will bytch and try to get changes done at a company (see Carl Icahn). Those index funds are not in that game.

So say if shareholders on that page are made up of 40 percent all thsoe groups fidelity, vanguard, and other companies that ive never heard of and then they have 60 percent as Other. Why is that 60 percent so insignificant that they arent worth mentioning but these 2 - 5 percent holders are?

that 60 percent is split up probably between a bunch of smaller institutions with even smaller fractions of ownership than 2-5%. that list is the top holders. Gone are the old days when a few guys held onto the majority stake of a major company.

google is a 390 billion dollar company so a 2% stake is worth like 7.8 billion.

They are saying that there are 310 million stocks in circulation, Fidelity owns 2.13% of those stocks which equals to 7.12 million.

If Google has a call with analyst, better believe Fidelity will be there and Fidelity calls will be returned by the CFO/CEO.

No one is saying the other guys who each own 0.00001% are unimportant, they all are stockholders at the end of the day.

They dont make any decisions though. If Fidelity doesnt like the direction Google is going they can say *whoa whoa whoa EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEz friend. Pull that back before we pull that stock :usure:* and google will obey

Everyone has pull because they can sell the shares if they are unhappy with Google.

Fund managers have way different objectives than activist shareholders who want to control the direction the company goes in as far business strategies, management, and balance sheet.

But most people are followers. They wait for the big boys to make a move before they do.
