How the U.S. Captured an al-Qaeda Leader in Broad Daylight

The U.S. military on Saturday carried out two chilling, intense operations against important terrorism suspects nearly simultaneously. One involved an hour-long firefight in Somalia. The other took place in a dangerous, unstable Libya and involved American troops capturing an al-Qaeda leader just after dawn.

Nazih Abdul-Hamed al-Ruqai, also known by his nom de guerre, Abu Anas al-Liby, has been one of the U.S. government's most desired terrorism targets for over a decade, with a $5 million bounty on his head. Al-Liby was indicted by a federal court in New York in 2000 for his alleged role in the 1998 embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania that killed more than 220 people. But recently the former al-Qaeda leader, one of the last remaining pillars of the original operation led by Osama bin Laden, was seen walking the street in Tripoli, Libya. And so yesterday's operation was given the go ahead. The U.S. Army's Delta Force moved in early Saturday morning to capture their target, alive, per the Associated Press:

Family members said gunmen in a three-car convoy seized al-Libi outside his home in the Libyan capital, Tripoli. Al-Libi is believed to have returned to Libya during the 2011 civil war that led to the ouster and killing of dictator Moammar Gadhafi.

His brother, Nabih, said the 49-year-old was parking outside his house early Saturday after dawn prayers, when three vehicles encircled his vehicle. The gunmen smashed his car's window and seized his gun before grabbing al-Libi and fleeing. The brother said al-Libi's wife saw the kidnapping from her window and described the abductors as foreign-looking armed "commandos."

Not exactly the best way to spend your Saturday morning. But that's how quickly the military can swoop in and snatch up terrorism suspects.

Elsewhere in Northern Africa, a team of Navy SEALs attacked a known al-Shabab hangout targeting the group's leader. They were to capture or kill him and, unfortunately, they retreated after a long firefight that required air reinforcements before confirming whether or not their goal was accomplished.

"We hope that this makes clear that the United States of America will never stop in the effort to hold those accountable who conduct acts of terror," Secretary of State John Kerry told reporters after news of the raids broke. "Members of al-Qaida and other terrorist organizations literally can run but they can't hide."

Right...its funny how they at first said it was a success and then later they said they had to abort mission. These terrorists are no joke. US better stop playing GI Joe before another Black Hawk Down situation happens.

I know that breh. Not cool for them especially the innocent civilians. The point is, they don't care if they die as long as you leave and give up first. In fact, the more you kill the harder they fight. The number of casualties is sometimes a wrong way to think about a war or battle. We can look throughout history and see conflicts where one side had a ridiculous amount of casualties and still got what they wanted from the Haitian revolution, Eastern Front in WW2, the US Civil War, to the Indochina war, to the Vietnam and Korean War, Afghan War, etc.

Breh, the only reason why these militants don't get wiped out completely is because there's a certain decorum our armed forces have to act by. They can't just go in there and indiscriminately shoot everyone up.

The only reason they don't get wiped out is because there is no long term money to be made by wiping them out. The US had control of a good chunk Somalia at one point , just like they did Afghanistan. Less than a regiment of Marines and various support units controlled a lot of important cities in a matter of days. This shyt seems almost deliberate to me now, giving away territory to prolong engagements.

I agree with this.

The point of my post was that our trained military would wipe the floor against these militants if they played by the same rules the militants are playing.

But they can bomb indiscriminately :rudy:

Americans always shoot up everyone, innocent people are killed all the time. The US has shown on numerous actions since WWII that they don't have the heart for a long term ground war. They can bomb all they want but eventually they will needs boots on the ground to control things.

What rules? :heh:.

Did you not see how many villages the US massacred in Vietnam and you are here talking about rules? fukk outta here b :stopitslime:

Understand that you are not fighting the militants but an ideology which will be around after some militants die. Americans are clueless of Islamic extremism. Fighting an ideology is like trying to grab air with your hands. You will always be fighting them, its a never ending war for these people.

I honestly think you have it backwards. It seems like deliberate prolonging of war in my eyes. Your talking about possibly the mightiest military to have ever existed on this planet just literally giving gained terrain to the enemy. It would be the equivalent of taking Normandy during D-Day and then going back across the English Chanel .

Just sitting back in the defense, carelessly holding onto territories. No offense. Pissing off the local populations, including South Vietnamese. Random, bullshyt bombing raids not only in Vietnam but adjacent countries, bombings that actually had no strategic effect.

Same in Korea. General MacArthur pushed the North Koreans literally into the border with China. When the Chinese sent one million troops across, he wanted to invade China and nuke them. DC was content as it was. Left those cats out there to die for a stalemate for no reason but greed in my opinion. Just enough war to keep the military contractors happy, but not too much war as to slow down booming US productions and industry.

I didn't realize this until I looked back on these wars after witnessing and reading reports of what was going on in Afghanistan. I can't find a single reason what the US military and government did what they did in Afghanistan except to prolong the war for some purpose. No military in the history of this planet would ever make decisions that stupid.
