Youtube has several nominations including Best Video (overall), Best Viral Video, Best Supporting Actor (that slumped guy), and Best Sound.
We go to the director for the inside scoop.
"We practiced the cutscene where the camera is briefly covered then revealed to show enough action that it looked legit. We had to be extra careful because if you show too much people know it's fake but if you show too little people know it's fake too. So we practiced the cutscene a bunch of times before we actually practiced the fight. I have got to thank Pablo Guilavillardos (Alex) and Scott Taylor (slumped guy -unnamed) for their parts. Two young and upcoming guys who were really apprehensive about these roles. It's tough right now, immigration is in the news, white fragility is everywhere, guns are a huge issue, even general violence is hot right now, we had to tiptoe and nearly walk on eggshells for this entire project. You're goal as a filmmaker is to make people feel but not stroke the flames of their biases. With all the said Pablo is the nicest guy ever. He's actually partners with Scott's roommate's cousin which shows how big LA is. The most difficult thing we struggled with was during the fight we had to get the sound right. We couldn't hit him for real then just keep stamping the same sound, so we had Pablo punch meat and we recorded that audio. He's a vegan and we have these raw meats, steak, round of chuck, he's such a nice guy he didn't even want to punch the meat. It was tough, we struggled but we were able to get through, I know he felt bad about it because he loves and respects animals but we were able to get it done."
