In times when oil price is high ( like right now) they're one of few producers that can lower it through increasing production. Doesnt really matter who the US imports its oil from, retailers are still purchasing it at the same price ( and customers will get passed on high gas prices, as a result)

Take what happened when Biden Admin tried to get them to increase production last month - they refused and stuck to the supply cut deal they have with Russia. Also abstained on UN votes re: Russia.

I think I remember them attempting to buy some arms from Russia or China (sorry I don't have the article) and them being reprimanded for it. When you can't even act in your states' best interest and are strong armed into buying US arms Even when they bought Chinese arms in the past it was with CIA approval.

But you're right MBS is reckless and different to the old school Al Saud. This may well be the trend in the future. Especially if relations between the West and Iran thaw. The Saudis will always deal with the US because the Chinese aren't interested in subsuming the US role militarily and because the US is an open economy where they can park and invest their dividends. Plus, socially its more fun being rich in the US (and other Western countries) as a Saudi elite, than it is in Russia or China.

But what is new as that they're willing to act diametrically to US interests on some issues (oil production quotas, Russian war, currency swap with China, increasing economic and military ties with China) while aligning closer on others (Israel comes to mind)
