Theyre selling off all their Canadian assets. Theyre going all out on this. Im afraid Canada is going to have to kiss the ring.

Hahaha. Canada's pension funds (public and private) will snap up this opportunity. This is great! Also, other international investors will want to get in on this sale.

Canada won't kiss the ring over this.

Trudeau will lose the next election if he falls back.

What do you think he can do. I don't think he can strike back in any measure without the US or the EU support. Canada is already asking their allies to help them cool things off with SA and the US gave them the :hubie:

SA will keep this aggressive behavior toward Canada and I don't see how Canada is going to respond.

Trudeau's best course of action in this scenario is to do nothing. All of Saudi Arabia's actions towards Canada are negligible.

Both the US and EU have strong relationships and diplomatic ties with SA. They're not gonna blindly side with Canada this time if it affects their own interests in the region.

Broader question is does this Trumpian style of diplomacy, where you try to embarass and humiliate actually benefit Saudi in the long run? Absolutley not IMO. The benefits of their engagements in Canada are self-evident ( trained their doctors, engineers, teachers) , a good source of agricultural products they demand ( wheat) and decent place to invest.

What do they get out of this debacle? At best, they make a political point that a) none of their Western partners are willing to risk their investments to drive hard for HR and b) HR critcism could risk investment. But it doesnt really help their bottom line and economically their problems are self evident :
A Target Saudis Can Ill Afford to Miss. And It's Not Aramco IPO

But thats probably the point. Has little to do with the interests of the Saudi pop at large, but about bolstering MBS image at home. It will help this muscular new jingostic style of nationalism that MBS seems to be building. The image of getting a Western country to fall back will bolster the idea hes made them a more powerful actor in the eye of his citizens.

Impractical and politically very difficult for them to fall back at this very moment, because the Saudis keep escalating. I agree its become political dynamite now, so they cant do anything.

But eventually we will see this:

King says his letter helped Sweden end spat with Saudis

A lot of posters outside of Canada don't understand that the Conservative Party will eat Trudeau alive if he backs down. Also, there's an election next year. Finally, most cac Canadians are patriots and don't like to be pushed around. That's why Trump's tarriffs had bipartisan resistance in Parliament.

I see a larger country bullying a smaller country but that's just me.
