Sankofa Amharic (ሳንኮፋ), is a 1993 Ethiopian-produced drama film directed by Haile Gerima centered on the Atlantic slave trade.
The storyline features Oyafunmike Ogunlano, Kofi Ghanaba, Mutabaruka, Alexandra Duah, and Afemo Omilami. The word Sankofa derives its meaning from the Ghanaian Akan language which means to "go back, look for, and gain wisdom, power and hope," according to Dr. Anna Julia Cooper.[1]
The word Sankofa stresses the importance of one not drifting too far away from one's past in order to progress in the future. In the film, Sankofa is depicted by a bird and the chants and drumming of a Divine Drummer.[2]
Gerima's film showed the importance of not having people of African descent drift far away from their African roots.
Gerima used the journey of the character Mona to show how the African perception of identity included recognizing one's roots and "returning to one’s source" (Gerima).

Yeah, it ran out of print. I used to send Amazon the DVDs but more gotta get made. It’s kinda the downside of being so staunchly independent. It’s little things like this that show me why so many people sell out. The machine is a powerful support system if you follow their marching orders. If you ain’t shakin ya ass for Hollywood then shyt is gonna be much tougher. I understand tho, I’ve dealt with this same problem for at least 3 years now. Ava got got his other film Ashes and Embers on TCM and Netflix for a little bit and that shyt kicked our asses :russ:

Also, the company that made the DVDs went under and never told us anything so as to prepare. I haven’t been in on the reprinting process but I imagine the issue of DVD vs Streaming came up more than once. All I can say is that it’s definitely being worked on. I think it just got lost in the shuffle because new films were being worked on. One of which is like the documentary version of Sankofa discussing the maroon struggle from Virginia all the way to Mexico. shyt is gonna be so tough breh. Trust when y’all see Haile’s new shyt y’all gon understand why it took so long to get Sankofa back out there. When it back available I’ll either find this thread or make a new one. :tu:

Thanks to one of the people who were mentored by Mr. Gerima, the film is on Netflix now. Ava Duvernay worked out the deal with him.

Yeah, kinda trippy to see. I’m used to the trenches all this fanfare kinda strange. It aint gon stop no bootlegger but now they gotta deal with Netflix too :russ:

I got my dvd copy from Tunde Dada in NJ in the 1990s.
Still have it, too.

Told everybody here to hold on to physical copies of media. I sound like a dinosaur, but streaming services don't have me by the balls, though.

Naw you right. Physical media is going to be important in the future. Streaming services is going to boost its value.
