I need to start with the sample more these days... I make banging drums then everything sounds good over them... but it makes it more difficult to elevate the track. i need to start more with the sample/synth. Just wish i could get my fukking nexus to work on mac

If I'm working with samples then sample 1st because the sample is my foundation. If I'm using instruments then the beat. But it all changes depending on the mood.

I don't usually sample, so snares first. kicks (subject to change, just for the feel), melody, leads, hits, all extra percussion +808s, then effects. Either add or take away any clutter like kicks or layers. Helps me gain stage and get things ready for mixing.

Since it sets the tone and mood , the reast is just starting with the most important element of that particular track and moving in order in mixing. usually its 808, kicks, snares, leads, melody then hats.
