I don't think they had a problem paying him whatever his salary was, they just weren't going to clear him after all the injuries he suffered. Like others have said, He probably went for second and third opinions and every doctor said the same thing the WWE said.

If I was lucky enough to wrestle as long as some of these guys have and made a ton of money doing it, I could easily walk away and spend the rest of my days on commentary or just sitting on my porch with a cup of Jack Daniels enjoying the fruits of my labor.

I guarantee you even though HHH has nothing to do with Smackdown, that release pissed him off just from a wrestling standpoint. Sean Ross Sapp and that Jimmy guy he does his wrestling news show with said that HHH & Stephanie laugh at Vince Changing the scripts all the time, but I'm pretty sure they're laughing out of frustration because of how much it hurts the overall product.
