In my old job, it was nightmare dealing with companies in the Gulf region, mainly because everything is tied in with the government/Sheikhs/Royal Family and everything takes an eternity to get finalized. The amount of people that have to sign off on stuff before it anything gets done is crazy.
While it is easier to get a work visa for a Western, I always had issues getting work visa's for Canadians, they usually took 4-6 weeks, while for US, UK and Western European nationals it usually came within 2 weeks. In Qatar & Saudi, they have a list of countries passports they automatically deny on entry (Iranian, Iraqi, Israeli, Syrian, Libyan, Yemeni and a couple of others.) Also in the Gulf Countries if you leave a country for an extended period with an outstanding debt and fail to pay it, you'll be blacklisted from the country upon re-entry and can be put in a holding cell.
