1 or 1.5 "down" years after all the best players and the hc are gone, are not enough to say a qb can't play anymore.. Look at Eli Manning and the majority of every qb in the league, being relegated to can't play status, just doesn't happen for most..

This is easily diffused. What he needs to do is offer to meet and talk with the soldier before the game. The day before or earlier on game day.
If the soldier refuses he can say he offered to reach out and have dialogue but was rejected. He can say he still has respect for the man and compliment the soldier for his perfect rendition of the national anthem.
This option gives the appearance that he did everything he could to make peace with the soldier without giving in on his principals.
Another option is to have a bunch of #veteransforkaepernick (multiple races and all genders for optics) at the game and show them not standing during the anthem at the game. Kaepernick's people can film it like it's part of a documentary (the nfl will do no such thing and neither will the networks). And release it during the backlash.
