I've been trying to gather my thoughts since having watched this movie last night and to say this movie is disturbing is an understatement. I felt tortured myself watching this but I got through the 2.5 hours hoping that at the end was an inkling of hope or good fortune but nada. After looking up info on the movie it seems like that was the director's intent.
To show the rich and powerful abuse and get away with it.

This film has been banned and still is in some countries but I think the public should watch it with the mindset that it's more of an art-extreme art than it is a movie with a plot and ending. I also felt that this was better than A Serbian Film. A Serbian Film came across as unrealistic, amateurish and trying to hard to be gore.

*Can't give this a rating but it's a required watch expecially if your really into films
*Also can't see myself watching this again
They were really into that type of shyt in the 1970's, especially in Italy. Not really sure what that was about.

My theory: it was a way to culturally engage with the legacy of fascism.

You couldn't simply make a straight movie about Nazism or fascism in Europe. The wounds were too fresh; many of the people with authority and power had authority and power during Nazism and fascism. Thus, you examined Nazism and fascism through the lens of sexual transgression (cf. The Night Porter, The Damned). The sexual transgression was the story rather than the Nazism/fascism; the former is shocking but not threatening to authority the way the latter would be.

It's kind of like the situation in early '60s Israel, where there was a cottage industry of books which were basically holocaust porn. This stuff sold like hotcakes...but it was the only way Israeli culture dealt with the Holocaust, which was a tacitly forbidden topic. Then they captured Eichmann, and the Holocaust taboo was lifted, and the Holocaust porn industry faded away.

That's my theory, anyway.

Been on an extreme horror binge and bought this a few months back. Still haven’t seen it.

Ive already checked Cannibal Holocaust and A Serbian Film, so I wonder how I’ll feel after watching this. Watched ASF first, and there was only one moment where I felt an ugly feeling in my stomach (newborn, well, you know). After watching ASF, CH was a cakewalk. Of course there were moments where I was :picard:, but after surviving ASF I think this “tamed” me a bit.

Salo is another dimension of fukkery. Very well made too.
It's not a Horror but a Horrific ordeal to watch.

Also, have you seen Good bye uncle tom?

Never heard of it. Worth buying?

Salo seems like a psychological horror film.
Oh it will definitely have an affect on your psych! Uncle Tom is a pretty messed up and very telling film, they use a quality craft production style with a top notch soundtrack made by an italian team. Filmed in Haiti and Italy. Prepared to get battered.

Salo is more like a concentration camp than a Horror film.

disturbing when you put things into perspective!!!

Japanese troops round up Chinese and Russian prisoners of war and take them to unit 731, where they're horribly tortured and experimented on to test new biological weapons.
