NFL Concussions Mega-Lawsuit Claims League Hid Brain Injury Links From Players

Scores of lawsuits involving thousands of former players touched by concussions and brain injuries have been consolidated into one master complaint, setting up a massive and potentially costly case for the NFL.

Lawyers for the players filed the complaint Thursday in Philadelphia, accusing the NFL of hiding information that linked football-related head trauma to permanent brain injuries. Among the illnesses cited were dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

The suit accuses the NFL of "mythologizing" and glorifying violence through the media, including its NFL Films division.

"The NFL, like the sport of boxing, was aware of the health risks associated with repetitive blows producing sub-concussive and concussive results and the fact that some members of the NFL player population were at significant risk of developing long-term brain damage and cognitive decline as a result," the complaint charges.

"Despite its knowledge and controlling role in governing player conduct on and off the field, the NFL turned a blind eye to the risk and failed to warn and/or impose safety regulations governing this well-recognized health and safety problem."

Bounty programs isn't something the league wants publicized right now.

The NFL Was Completely Fine With "Smash-For-Cash" Bounty Programs 16 Years Ago [Updated With Video]

The four players implicated in the Saints bounty scandal are in a kind of limbo, as their suspension appeals make their way through through federal court, as well as the league's CBA-mandated appeals process. The latest movement comes in a Louisiana District Court, where yesterday the NFLPA filed papers suggesting that the NFL not only knew about previous cash-for-hits programs, but publicly said they were A-OK. The only difference between then and now? The league wasn't in the middle of the PR nightmare of concussions and head trauma.

The filing is below, with the good stuff on Page 8. In January of 1996, ESPN aired a segment on a Packers bounty program administered by Reggie White. "Smash-for-Cash" paid out $500 for big hits, and was originally funded by the entire team, but had paid out so much by the playoffs that White and DE Sean Jones contributed to keep it going.

The ESPN report also cited similar programs around the league, including one in Philadelphia that Troy Vincent was more than happy to discuss on camera. The most damning thing in the segment was the response, from an unnamed NFL spokesman:

"The 'Smash-for-Cash' program is within the rules as long as players use their own monies, the amounts are not exorbitant, and the payments are not for illegal hits."

There's more. The NFLPA's court filing also cites a 1996 AP article that fleshes out some of the details of White's program.

"I gave them money for big hits,'' White said, explaining how he spent his entire $13,000 game check to reward players $500 apiece for big hits in Green Bay's playoff win over San Francisco. "I don't know if the money is any more motivation, but I know I paid out a lot."

The article adds that the Packers had been giving out cash bonuses for big plays and big hits since 1994. And once again, the NFL gave a statement explicitly condoning the program.

Greg Aiello, an NFL spokesman, said there was nothing wrong with what White did, likening it to a quarterback buying gifts for his offensive linemen.

Goodell is a piece of shyt, lacking any of the admirable qualities of his predecessors. He loves the attention and does everything he can to get his face out there. :pacspit:

Well his predecessors didnt give a shyt about pay for play and big hits, teams were right out in the open with it and admitted it to everyone. If the NFL was getting hit with law suit after law suit back then dont you think Tagliabue would have had to do something too? You cant have law suits on your hands dealing with player safety and at the same time overlook pay pots for huge hits and knocking people out of games.

Not trying to defend Goodell like that but the landscape of the NFL has changed a lot since he took office.

I see on ESPN outside the lines they're replaying a segment originally aired in 1997 on "Smash for Cash" incentives. Funny how back then it was no big deal for Reggie White to admit he established a $9,500 pot for big hits. Everyone pretty much saw it as no big deal, yet today it's a huge ordeal

NFLPA files papers in federal court, cites NFL-permitted incentive program in 1996 - ESPN

back then was the nfl getting hit with lawsuits dealing with injuries and shyt? i honestly believe this could be a reason

That's why you COVER THAT SHYT UP. But no, Goodell wants to be Mr. Fix It so he can be seen as a saint in the media. Fukk that. Cover it up and stop neutering the damn league.

How you cover up players committing suicide and donating their brains for scientific research?
