From a purely ethnic/cultural POV, the Rus tribe come from Kiev. Putin has this thinking that Ukraine, Belarus and Russia are and should be a whole.

Geopolitically, he feels threatened by NATO being at its door. Ukraine wanting to be part of it (because of Putin's Crimea annexion ironically) is an absolute red line for him for those 2 reasons.
Ukraine has pro-Russia / Russophone people in its eastern regions and there is a real disconnect with them and Kiev which is pro-West. Those regions have been rebelling and Putin is using this as his casus belli to take Ukraine. This really is his end game though it's unlikely that he will be able to reach Kiev.
There are quite a few levels between dying in Kiev and fleeing the moment Russia invades.
