Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of the Russian mercenary group Wagner, has made a series of shocking allegations against the Russian military and government. Here's what you need to know:
Prigozhin claims that the Russian military has attacked his fighters, causing significant casualties. He has vowed to avenge this alleged attack and stop the "evil" of the military leadership. The Russian Ministry of Defense has denied these accusations, calling them an "informational provocation."
In a series of audio messages on his official Telegram channel, Prigozhin accused those who "destroyed our lads" and "destroyed the lives of many tens of thousands of Russian soldiers" of needing to be punished. He urged for no resistance to be offered.
Prigozhin has also criticised the Kremlin's rationale for invading Ukraine, calling it a lie concocted by the army's top brass. He suggests that the war was not needed for demilitarisation or denazification of Ukraine, but was instead about the vanity and personal glory of Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu.
The mercenary chief has been increasingly critical of Moscow, accusing Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and Russia's top general Valery Gerasimov of incompetence. He has now dismissed Russia's core justifications for invading Ukraine.
A video posted on a Telegram channel associated with the Wagner group shows a forest scene with small fires and broken trees, allegedly the aftermath of a missile attack on Wagner camps. The caption claims the strike was delivered by the Russian Ministry of Defence.
Prigozhin has stated that there are 25,000 members of his group who will seek to understand why "chaos" is happening in the country. However, he has also clarified that his actions do not constitute a military coup.
