TRUMP PRESS CONFERENCE AT 3:45PM EST!

President Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner reportedly advocated an "attack" response style over a more measured reaction in a White House huddle on Wednesday, according to a new report.

The meeting followed the appointment of former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel in charge of the Department of Justice investigation into Russian election meddling. It resulted in conflicting messages issued by the White House in response to the appointment.

After Trump learned that the Department of Justice named a special counsel to probe Russia's election meddling and possible collusion by the Trump campaign, the president called in staff members including Kushner, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer, Communications Director Michael Dubke, Chief of Staff Reince Priebus and Chief Strategist Stephen Bannon, The New York Times reported.

While most of the people encouraged the president to issue a statement accepting the decision of the deputy attorney general, Kushner didn't agree, two senior administration officials told the Times.

Instead, Kushner pushed for the president to counter-attack.

The White House then released a statement late on Wednesday voicing confidence that the newly appointed special counsel leading the federal investigation would find no collusion between Trump's campaign and Moscow.

"A thorough investigation will confirm what we already know - there was no collusion between my campaign and any foreign entity," Trump said in the Wednesday statement. "I look forward to this matter concluding quickly."

But on Thursday, the president sent out a series of morning tweets in stark contrast to his measured reaction from the day before.

"This is the single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history!" Trump tweeted.

"With all of the illegal acts that took place in the Clinton campaign & Obama Administration, there was never a special councel [sic] appointed!" he said in another tweet.

One wonders how this affects the love triangle between the president, his daughter and son in law

LIVE BRIEFING
Deputy Attorney General to Appear in Rare All-Senate Hearing
  • appointed Robert S. Mueller III, a former F.B.I. director, as a special counsel to oversee its investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election, the deputy attorney general, Rod J. Rosenstein, announced on Wednesday.

    ■ Mr. Rosenstein will brief the Senate in a closed meeting at 2:30 p.m.

    ■ President Trump will hold a joint news conference with President Juan Manuel Santos of Colombia at 3:45 p.m. Eastern time.

There is one thing Congress agrees on right now: They have questions — lots and lots of questions. And on Thursday, one of the officials near the epicenter of the Trump administration’s cascading controversies will try to answer some of them.

Rod J. Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general who recommended James B. Comey’s termination as F.B.I. director and, on Wednesday, appointed a special counsel to take over the investigation, is scheduled for a rare all-Senate briefing Thursday afternoon.

The briefing was announced on Monday, a virtual lifetime ago in a week that has featured several revelations related to the F.B.I.’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election — including a report by The New York Timesdetailing how Mr. Trump asked Mr. Comey to drop an investigation into Michael T. Flynn, Mr. Trump’s first national security adviser.

Republicans and Democrats want more information, with several congressional committees inviting Mr. Comey to testify. But Thursday’s briefing is seen as an important step in obtaining that information.

While it will happen behind closed doors, “I hope that much of what we learn today can be shared with the American public,” said Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, the Democratic leader.

Mr. Rosenstein will also brief members of the House on Friday at 10 a.m.

More requests from Congress for documents
The top Republican and Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee said Thursday that they, too, had asked the Justice Department and the F.B.I. for more documents related to the investigation into Russian election meddling — including the so-called Comey memo detailing discussions between Mr. Trump and Mr. Comey.

The committee’s statement noted that the request was made on Wednesday. Add it to the pile: The Senate Intelligence Committee and the House Oversight Committee were among the congressional panels that made similar requests, though they also asked Mr. Comey to testify.

    How Trump found out
The president learned of Mr. Rosenstein’s decision around 5:35 p.m. on Wednesday when the White House counsel, Donald F. McGahn II, walked into the Oval Office to tell him.

Mr. Trump, who was looking through papers, reacted calmly but defiantly at first, according to two people familiar with the events, saying he wanted to “fight back.” Realizing the seriousness of the situation, he quickly summoned his staff, including Sean Spicer, the press secretary; Michael Dubke, the communications director; Mr. Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner; Reince Priebus, the chief of staff; Hope Hicks, a longtime aide; Kellyanne Conway, a senior adviser; and Stephen K. Bannon, his chief strategist.

Most of those gathered recommended that the president adopt a conciliatory stance and release a statement accepting Mr. Rosenstein’s decision and embracing a swift investigation that would clear the cloud of suspicion hovering over the West Wing.

Mr. Kushner — who had urged Mr. Trump to fire James B. Comey, the F.B.I. director — was one of the few dissenting voices, urging the president to counterattack, according to two senior administration officials. After a brief discussion, however, calmer heads prevailed, and Mr. Trump’s staff huddled over a computer just outside the Oval Office to draft the statement that was ultimately released, asserting the president’s innocence and determination to move on.

By the end of the process, Mr. Trump was calm, determined to push his agenda and uncharacteristically noncombative, according to people close to the president.

I've seen tweets and Facebook posts from these idiots. They truly think this dude is being persecuted, and has done no wrong. These are the same folks that call themselves patriots. If they were so patriotic, they'd be mad as hell right now. WE'VE BEEN COMPROMISED BY OUR BIGGEST ENEMY!!! A COUNTRY THAT HAS HAD NUKES POINTED AT US FOR DECADES, AND MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE BEEN COMPLICIT IN THE ASSASSINATION OF ONE OF OUR PRESIDENTS!!!
You can't tell these braindead idiots shyt. They're even talking about taking up arms and shyt. Equal parts pathetic and disturbing.

To them, it's not treason if they don't accept the country as their own. There are no rules in war. And Trump is leading their vanguard.

US spies heard Russian intelligence agent vowing to target Clinton: report

US spies heard Russian intelligence agent vowing to target Clinton: report
U.S. spies reportedly heard a Russian military intelligence officer bragging about his organization planning to target Hillary Clinton in May 2016.

The officer told a colleague that GRU would cause havoc in America’s presidential election, Time reported Thursday.

The officer reportedly described the intelligence agency’s effort as retribution for what Russian President Vladimir Putin considered Clinton’s influence campaign against him while serving as secretary of State.

Senior U.S. intelligence officials told Time that American spies transcribed the conversation and sent it to headquarters for analysis.

Time reported that an official document based on the raw intelligence was then circulated.
“We didn’t really understand the context of it until much later,” a senior U.S. intelligence official said.

Putin publicly accused Clinton of conducting a major operation against Russia when protests erupted in more than 70 cities in 2011.

The Russian leader said that Clinton had sent “a signal” to demonstrators and that the State Department had actively worked to fuel the unrest.

The State Department countered that it had only funded pro-democracy organizations.

Former officials told Time that such operations would have required a special intelligence finding by the president.

Former President Obama was unlikely to have issued such a directive, Time’s sources added.

Multiple investigations are now looking into Russia meddling in the 2016 presidential election, and any possible coordination with President Trump's campaign.
