ARussian programmer has been arrested in Spain on suspicion of involvement in attempts to influence the outcome of the 2016 US presidential election, local media reported.

Spain’s national criminal court will consider a US extradition request for Peter Levashov, who was detained at Barcelona airport on Friday, some time in the next month.

A legal source told the AFP that Levashov is “suspected of having participated in hacking the election campaign in the United States."

Mr Levashov’s wife earlier said she had been told her husband’s arrest was linked to alleged interference on the US election.

Speaking to Russia Today, the state-owned TV station, late on Sunday, Maria Levashova said her husband had been detained "at the request of the American authorities in connection with cyber crime".

She said the Spanish police had told her it was in connection with "a virus which appears to have been created by my husband (and) is linked to Trump's victory."

The US authorities have 40 days from the date of Mr Levashov’s arrest to make their case for extradition.

US intelligence officials believe the Kremlin directed an influence operation during last year’s election campaign which included hacking and leaking emails from the Democratic National Convention in a bid to embarrass Hillary Clinton.

The FBI is investigating the alleged interference campaign, including any possible links between Russia and the Trump campaign.

The Russian government has called the allegations absurd.

Key points from FBI and NSA director's testimony

Some Russian cyber security experts have suggested Mr Levashov may actually be one Peter Severa, a figure known to have been active in the “digital underground” in the late 2000s.

The Register of Known Spam Operations, a group that collates information on individuals linked to gangs who mass send junk emails, lists the name Peter Levashov as an alias of Peter Severa.

The register describes Severa as: “a spammer who writes and sells virus-spamming spamware and botnet access. Is probably involved in the writing and releasing of viruses & trojans. One of the longest operating criminal spam-lords on the internet.”

Russian cyber espionage experts say Severa has previously been linked with the Russian security services.

“What we know about him is that many years ago – around say 2012 - when the FSB first began trying to recruit people in the digital underground, the problem was how to get access to the closed community of hackers. You need to be invited. Some sources say he provided access,” said Andrei Soldatov, co-author of the Red Web.

Some reports say Severa was even kicked out of a hacking forum when he began to recruit openly for security services, alarming others involved in the legally shady digital underworld.

There has been little news of Mr Severa’s activities in the years since, and his name has not previously been publically mentioned in connection with the alleged hacking of the Democratic National Convention.

“It is possible that US authorities may have started a sweep for anyone who is believed to have connections with the FSB and the cyber underworld in a bid to get as much information as possible,” said Mr Soldatov.
