Russia’s troll factory also paid for 100 activists in the US
Russia’s troll factory also paid for 100 activists in the US

Russian independent media are having an impressive week in exposing how the country’s government allegedly tried to influence the US 2016 elections using online trolls.

On Monday (Oct. 16), a man going under the pseudonym Maksim told TV Rain(paywall) that he was paid to post negative comments on Facebook and sites like the New York Times about Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and to stoke America’s internal divisions on religion and LGBTQ rights. He was working for the “Internet Research Agency,” a company in St Petersburg, which is believed to have done work spreading political messages and trolling on the Kremlin’s behalf.

Today, business site RBC revealed the numbers that allegedly made the company work. It reports (link in Russian) that over two years the agency spent $2.3 million on its US operations. Most of that was spent on Russian staff—around 90 employees(link in Russian) were working on the US at the height of the trolling campaign in 2016—but it also paid for 100 US activists to travel around America, organizing 40 rallies in US cities, and spent $120,000 spreading their message on Facebook. (The Silicon Valley giant has admitted that thousands of ads were bought under Russian IP addresses during the campaign.) The 100 activists didn’t suspect any Russian involvement in the funding, RBC reports.

Data Number
Total US operation expenses $2.3 million
Staff working on US campaign up to 90 people
Number of US social media accounts/communities At least 118
Total subscribers More than 6 million
Most page views in a week 70 million (October 2016)
American activists supported 100
Rallies held in US cities 40
Budget to support US activists Approx. $80,000 over two years
Budget for social media promotion Approx. $120,000 over two years
The trolls produced content aimed at riling both the left and right—for example, pushing Texan independence and religious evangelism at the same time as African-American and LGBTQ rights. Those writing the content earned around 55,000 rubles per month (approx. $1,000), while administrators made 80,000-90,000 rubles, and managers took home 120,000 (around $2,100). RBC reports that the factory still has a US desk, but its employees now number around 50.

Kremlin foe Navalny can run for president 'after 2028'

Moscow (AFP) - Vladimir Putin's top critic Alexei Navalny will be able to run for president after 2028, the head of the Russian Central Election Commission said on Tuesday.

Russians are scheduled to go to polls to elect a president next March and Navalny, 41, has declared his intention to run against Putin.

In February 2017, a court found Navalny guilty of embezzlement and handed him a five-year suspended sentence.

While Navalny and his supporters say his prosecution is political, officials say the ruling makes him ineligible to run for Russia's top job.

The case dates back to 2013 and a retrial came after the European Court of Human Rights said the first trial was unfair.

Ella Pamfilova, the head of the Central Election Commission, said Navalny would be able to put his name on the ballot once his criminal record has been expunged -- "after 2028."

Speaking at a forum in the Black Sea resort of Sochi, Pamfilova said Navalny would be able to run in about 10 years and five months.

"He's got his whole life ahead of him," she was quoted as saying by Russian news agencies.

"So he should proceed from that. And good luck to him!" she added, calling him a "young, promising politician."

Putin, 65, was Russia's first elected president in 2000 and is widely expected to seek another six-year Kremlin term in the March election.

Navalny has dismissed all charges against him, accusing the authorities of seeking to sabotage his political career.

In early October a court sentenced Navalny to 20 days in jail over repeatedly violating a law on organising public meetings.

Earlier this year the charismatic Yale-educated lawyer served sentences of 15 days and 25 days for organising unauthorised anti-Putin protests.

In 2013, Navalny stood for Moscow mayor with a Western-style campaign and a message of snuffing out corruption, coming second against a Kremlin-backed incumbent.

For the record, the younger Kelly had a wife. Spouses are who are listed to be contacted when there is one, not parents

Furthermore that's a statement put out by this bullshyt WH.
Could have been according to anyone of the liars, the crypt keeper, the Nazi, huckabooboo or Cheeto himself.

Senate subpoenas former Trump adviser Carter Page
Senate Subpoenas Former Trump Adviser Carter Page

by Marianna Sotomayor and Kasie HuntOct 17 2017, 1:49 pm ET
WASHINGTON — The Senate Intelligence Committee has subpoenaed documents and testimony from Carter Page as part of its investigation of Russia's alleged intervention in the 2016 election, a source directly familiar with the matter told NBC News.

The committee expects Page will invoke his Fifth Amendment rights and refuse to answer questions, the source said.

It's a dramatic switch for Page, who earlier this year seemed eager to participate in the Senate probe. Page has said he was interviewed by the FBI in March about potential ties between Donald Trump's presidential campaign and Russians.

In an email, Page referred NBC News to comments he made to the Washington Examiner in a story published October 11. "I have offered to participate in the November first hearing," he told the paper. He did not confirm or deny that he had been served with a subpoena from the committee.

On November 1, the committee has scheduled an open hearing with social media giants including Twitter, Facebook and Google.

Page served as a foreign policy adviser to then-candidate Trump’s campaign and he has drawn scrutiny for meeting with the former Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak during the Republican National Convention last year.

During the campaign's transition to the White House, former press secretary Sean Spicer denied that Trump knew Page personally.

The subpoena comes after months of Senate Intelligence Committee interviews with people of interest in the Russia probe. Earlier this month, Chairman Richard Burr, R-N.C., and Vice Chairman Mark Warner, D-Va., announced the committee has analyzed over 100,000 pages of documents in the course of the investigation.

Earlier this year, senators on the committee granted Burr and Warner blanket authority to issue subpoenas in the Russia investigation. Burr has previously told reporters that subpoenas could be issued if people of interest do not work with the committee.

"Everything has been voluntary up to this point, and we’ve interviewed a lot of people, and I want to continue to do it in a voluntary fashion," Burr said at a press conference in May. "But if in fact the production of things that we need are not provided, then we have a host of tools."

The committee has already issued three subpoenas to Trump’s former national security adviser General Michael Flynn and his companies.

Page has repeatedly denied he has inappropriate ties to Russia and claims he did nothing wrong in the course of advising the Trump campaign.
