I started running outside because of the pandemic. Any advice or tips to stay warm or avoid injury? I don't know my pace, but I normally do 6-7 miles in an hour. I'm trying to do more.

I'm trying to figure out mostly attire. If you have running advice, I'll take that too.

How cold does it get where you live? I have had to do my runs at night and in the cold and all I wore was shorts and a shirt. Once your body gets warmed up (at least 5min into the run) it's not so bad. I'm from Cali so it doesn't get real cold.

Sub 50 degree weather, while running I normally wear a beanie or some light headgear and a long sleeve tee. Can normally get away with shorts unless it's gets below 40 for me. I'ma find out tonight:sadcam:

depends on what’s “cold” to you but I still run in shorts and a long sleeve tech shirt in 40-45 degree weather. After about a half mile or so you will get warmer so it’s not an issue.

but those below 40 degree temps, I rock some tights with half tights under. Get some decent socks (I wear Stance) and a good running jacket will hold you down. Avoid all that heavy cotton stuff like sweatshirts/pants because it will weigh you down once you sweat. Spend the $ and get some good gear and pick your pieces carefully because you wanna have good range of motion in your arms/legs.

last year i got some North Face tights that I liked ($80-ish bucks) and if it got cold I put some thinner cheap Nike tights under as a base layer. Find a good hat to keep the heat from escaping your head so easily and if it gets colder look at a baklava style head covering (Nike makes one, I’m sure other companies do as well). I ditch the gloves unless I really need it.

Warm tf up beforehand, and active (not static) stretch

Sorry, I disappeared from this thread because the temp hasn't dropped again. It has been in the 50s-70s since I made this thread. I'll come back when it drops so I can try everything. Thank you!

I’m weird but I like to look at the cold as an added challenge. I layer up and run in anything. Shorts for 40 and above, layers for less. Slow jog till I get going and then I just battle the elements.

working out in the cold looks a lot worse than it is...I actually like it.

I dont run, but ive been a winter cyclist for 10+ years.

It all comes down to your:

Ears: im good with a headband till around 35F...then ill put on a thin hat
Hands: on the bike I wear lobster gloves...Im sure runners have something similar
Feet: socks make a big difference.

the body and legs are pretty easy...its all about layering...
...the colder it is, the thicker the layers.

Personally I dont consider it cold till it gets in the 20's...
...for the most part, its not the cold that makes running/cycling bad, its the snow/ice.

Make sure you protect your chest properly. I use to run frequently, not as much these days because I’m trying to change from beating myself up with working out into a more active state of movement.

I think the lowest temperature I ran in was somewhere close to 0 Celsius this past February when I was in Stuttgart, Germany. Was ice and cold as fukk out there. Developed a little chest cold from it.

You gotta be careful with cold weather depending on what you do normally. Like, I smoke weed a lot so runs generally clear my chest out. Combine that with cold air and you’ll increase your chances of getting sick.

as far as attire, you should definitely have some leggings of sorts to keep that heat in. Also, a top that keeps heat in while letting moisture out.

Also, COVER YOUR HEAD!

I always dress like it’s actually 20 degrees warmer than the actual temp. For example, I’m usually in shorts and tees unless the actual temp is below 40 something degrees. Between 30’s and mid/high 40’s I may add a hoodie or a long sleeve shirt, maybe even gloves on the lower end of that range. Below 30 degrees the pants come out or I wear tights under my shorts, gloves, and maybe a beanie. The lowest temp I’ve ever ran in, not counting dumb shyt I was forced to do in the military, is probably somewhere in the low 20’s.

No excuses.

I rock running tights, jog pants, warm socks, hoodie, flannel and gardening gloves.

Hill sprints up the snowy mountains.

Once you warmed up its fine.

Ain't nothing realer than snow running. Where real motherfukkers get made.
