It's an overblown narrative based on the fact that he didn't pick many club-friendly beats. He has a similar share of bad beats to 99% of rappers.
Is there some Al Jarreau on your Playlist? Not talking just singles? Are you a real fan of Al?
Yeah Timbo has always fed Jay garbage outside 'The Bounce' beat.
Yall act like Jay wasnt picking the beats himself and has to take what Timbaland gave him
Timbaland is just a wack producer when it comes to hiphop. Feel the same way about the Neptunes.
that production style has aged horribly. So it all sounds like trash now. You have to judge if the production bothered you in real time.
No lyrics will ever be good enough to neglect the production underneath. It’s inexcusable.
I know you are a 100% it was even in 'The Black Album' DVD. Timbo was playing great slaps that Jay was just passing over and Timbo started joking because He thought Jay's ears weren't working.
All those beats were garbage to me.
I got second hand embarrasment at Timbaland bouncing around not realizing they were trash. Ive heard better instrumentals at the circus watching clowns climb out of a clown car. Then when Jay stood up like Dirt Of Your Shoulder was the one. Please, that beat was as wack as the last three he played..
Let this be a lesson to upcoming producers. Bounce around like your having a seizure listening to your beats. And you might fool some artist into thinking they listening to a masterpiece smh. Crazy how much having a name can do for you.
I like the truth in this.
I dont like 'Dirt off your shoulders' and Timbo has never given Jay a great beat in my opinion. 'Big Pimpin' was trash too.
Nas got lucky with 'You owe me' and then Snoop with 'Set it Off' outside that Timbo should stick to RnB like the Aaliyah joints 'Hot like Fire' and etc.
We on the same squad on that regards. I even wrote the above a few years back. Most of The Coli agreed.
Rap music beats shouldn't necessarily be timeless and "age well". Rap is a unique, of the moment genre and rapidly changing. Rap beats should be relevant to a certain time mostly imo
I completely agree, except for Big Pimpin lol. But like i said earlier, good songs can cover up bad beats. And the flows from all 3 and the hook just make that a good song that make that beat work. Its not a good standalone beat.
But you were right throughout that thread. But its a nuanced convo, becauase i also agree with this response in your thread to a certain extent
But again, when a beat "ages poorly" its probably a sign that the song wasnt all that good in real time, and maybe the beat or the performance carried in real time. But over time, the beat or performance has aged. And now the weakness of the beat or the performance is being exposed.
