why compare the two? They are both great albums.
I'll admit, Illmatic I was aware of but I wasn't really aware of hip-hop like that to really dig it back then. It was reall It Was Written that introduced me to Nas and at that point in 1996 that nikka was god status in my eyes.
But ATLiens is a personal favorite of mine so I'll go with that. 1996 was the real year the South was breaking through IMO with Outkast, goodie mob, dungeon fam, organized noise, timbaland etc...

i thought he would be older but he would need to drastically change his style to blow or even tho get some hype again. he needed to drop a proper album in about 2005 and he could have seen some kind of success.
