Between signing to Griselda Records last year and featuring on multiple tracks with Westside Gunn on Hitler Wears Hermes 8 - considered by many to be one of the best releases of 2021, Rome Streetz has come a long way and feels like he has the world at his feet. During that timeframe, the emcee had just released Razor's Edge with one of the hardest working producer in the game in Futurewave, before releasing Coup de Grace with Ransom just a few months later.
Since becoming Griselda's grittiest addition to the roster including today's grimiest rappers and releasing his last project on the 29th October of 2021, people were eager to hear Rome Streetz's first official release with Griselda Records, he who had already acquired a loyal and loving fanbase, before even heading to Europe for his tour and witnessing all the support from overseas.
The title of the album "Kiss the Ring" had already been teased for a while, and created an infatuation between old Rome Streetz fans, new Griselda fans and admirers of authentic rapping style best appropriated by those from the East Coast. After a lot of hard-work and appearing on many other rappers' projects in 2022, it was time for Rome Streetz to show the rapping industry that he's not here to joke around, he who is constantly working on new music. The definition of not resting on his laurels.
Kiss The Ring was released on the 30th of September, after many speculated that the body of work would be released in the second half of the year, and features Conway the Machine, Stove God Cooks, Benny the Butcher, Armani Caesar, Westside Gunn and Boldy James. The production list includes the legendary The Alchemist, the unstoppable Conductor Williams, Denny LaFlare, Camouflage Monk, Daringer, DJ Green Lantern, Sadhugold and Sovren.
It is worth noting at the start of this review that Conductor Williams and Rome Streetz work absolutely perfectly with each other, William's production from Heart On Froze to Reversible is some of his best yet, his production is outstanding and Rome's pen on the project is at its best when floating over these Conductor Williams instrumentals.
The start of the body of work opens up with Big Steppa produced by Camouflage Monk, in which Rome expresses his need for others to put some respect on his name: "I'll smoke your whole Top 20, fukk 5 that's definite." [...] "Gain shyt, this the medicine [...] you could never fukk with me never, I been a big stepper."
Kiss the Ring, executive produced by Westside Gunn Griselda Record/Empire's latest studio album since Tana Talk 4 by Benny the Butcher came out in March earlier this year, and this can be heard. Westside Gunn's influence on the project is phenomenal, and doesn't take away anything from Rome Streetz's artistry, who displays an impressive level of confidence throughout.
On Soulja Boy with Conway the Machine, both emcees sound menacing, something that both individuals usually like to display, on top of William's incredible production. After four songs in, Kiss the Ring hints towards being a grimy, and raw project, with the theme of the album just being how much heat Rome Streetz is showing, something he had told me just over three months ago. And this is exactly what people can expect to hear.
Some tracks, such as Destiny Child, display Rome's immaculate use of different cadences, which he is able to utilize to his advantage, on Tyson Beckford - a nod to the American model and actor-, both the instrumental and Rome Streetz sound more menacing than before. Something to really think about for the competition, who don't do it like Griselda Records.
To call Conductor William's production on Blow 4 Blow flawless almost sounds like an understatement- the track is both soothing in its composition and threatening in its utilization of its loops. As is Rome Streetz technicality: "I know seeing me style this making you n***** miserable, keep watching my moves you gonna be suicidal, I am God I always knew to never worship idols."
It is safe to say, every artists featured on Kiss the Ring killed it. Stove God Cooks and Benny the Butcher complemented ever so well Conductor Williams and Rome Streetz on the previous tracks whilst Armani Caesar displays her hunger to be better than most on Armed and Dangerous, talking about the perfect mix between love, sex, and power. "We young and dangerous, y'all know not to play with us" Armed and Dangerous is smooth, explicit, and eloquent, whilst keeping a beautiful dynamic between the pair.
Boldy James on the other hand accompanies the instrumental beautifully with Rome Streetz on Serving, produced by Denny LaFlare, as both artists feel comfortable, the track works perfectly and sets up the end of the project nicely.
Kiss the Ring is everything I had expected to be, heat and a rise to success are key ingredients in Rome Streetz's career, the influence shown from Westside Gunn to trust Streetz's artistic abilities ultimately means that people are finally catching on, and that's good to hear.
As Rome often indicates, this is merely the start.
My top track on the project include In too Deep, Reversible, Non Factor featuring Westside Gunn and Armed and Dangerous with Armani Caesar.
