Two weeks later, after saying I'd give it a listen, I finally did this morning...
With that said, out of 5 stars I'd give it a 4 or 4½. It's a very good album and one of his best; I'd say it's better than his work with Futurewave and maybe Muggs but not better than Noise Kandy 5 or Kiss The Ring. I don't think the beats are subpar or underwhelming. Rome wanted a gritty, dark, moody type of album, and it worked perfectly, IMO.
However, I do think Kiss The Ring is more grandiose in sound/anticipation (y'know like an event), and Noise Kandy 5 (which I prefer over Kiss The Ring) is Rome going back to the basics pre-Griselda style, but there's a certain charm and finesse throughout that works. This seems a bit mid in terms of not leaving an impression. Since joining Griselda, Rome is arguably one of the better rappers out now, but some of his work lately isn't leaving much to desire, not because it's bad, but because expectations have risen since joining the label.
Similar to Boldy James, we're expecting big monumental types of records similar to how WSG, with his HWH series and a few of his albums, or when Benny or Conway released some of their best work felt like an event to be experienced. I don't know if Griselda is holding guys like Rome or even Boldy back from rising above “just being good” because that's what this feels like for Rome and to a certain extent Boldy, which is another conversation for a different day, we know these guys are good, a few of the best currently in the game but some of their recent records feel a bit mailed-in.
