Count former All-Pro safety Rodney Harrison among the skeptics. In a phone interview last week, the NBC analyst said Kaepernick's indecisiveness and inaccuracy suggest that he's not spending enough time studying his craft.
Harrison said Kaepernick should spend less time "worrying about his six-pack and how he looks" and more time hunkered down in the film room. Harrison, who won two Super Bowl trophies as Tom Brady's teammate with the New England Patriots, hailed Brady as a role model for preparation.
"Tom knew coming out of college that he needed to work on his body, and he did. He'd be in the weight room at 5:30, 6 in the morning," Harrison said. "But then you'd see him spend hours and hours after that watching film. He'd always seek out the defensive backs and pick our brains. 'How did you know to jump that route?' ... 'How did you know that was going to be an out?' "
Harrison said that such dedication to the mental side of the game allows players such as Brady, the Seahawks' Russell Wilson and the Indianapolis Colts' Andrew Luck to make the most of their instincts on game days.
He's not seeing that with Kaepernick.
"Once he comes off his first read, he gets happy feet because he knows he's going to have to go to his second read -- and that there's no way he's going to make it to his third read," Harrison said. "That's when you can force him out of the pocket. Yes, he's dangerous (as a runner) out of the pocket, but he's even less accurate throwing the ball out of the pocket."
Bruce Miller, the 49ers fullback, called Harrison's assessment -- and others like it -- "very outlandish ... off the wall." Miller said that nobody on the team puts in more film-room time than Kaepernick.
"I get here early, and his white car is always in the parking lot. Then I'm getting ready to leave, and it's in the same spot," said Miller, who caught Kaepernick's lone touchdown pass against the Raiders last week. "He's in there every single day working his tail off to study the film. He's working with the coaches on the game plan and making sure he has all the keys and reads down."
Offensive coordinator Greg Roman, in a spirited defense of Kaepernick on Thursday, said: "He's out-dueled a lot of great quarterbacks, right? Do I need to list it? Do I need to make that list? He's had a great career in his short span that he has been a starter."
Kaepernick is 3-0 in his career against Aaron Rodgers, the Green Bay Packers' MVP candidate, with two wins coming in the playoffs. In his only career game against Brady, Kaepernick threw four touchdown passes to lead a 41-34 victory on a freezing December night at Gillette Stadium in 2012.
This nikka Rodney hates everything thats black and athletic.
Holy shyt this nikka really is Ruckus Harrison II.
I always knew he was a fakkit who cheated, tried to end careers, and took steroids. But breh is an awful human being. A disgrace.
