Rocko’s Modern Life is coming back, in the form of an animated movie next year. While perhaps not the most popular among the
well-remembered Nicktoons stable of the 1990s,
Rocko’s Modern Life was truly most of the unique programs ever broadcast on Nickelodeon. Similar to the more high-profile
Ren & Stimpy Show, Rocko’s made a name for itself partially on its ability to seemingly sneak very
adult-oriented and raunchy jokes past the Nickelodeon censors. This led to a sizeable cult fanbase for the cartoon, which is now looked back on quite fondly by many.
Now, over 20 years since the last episode of
Rocko’s Modern Life aired,
TV Line reports that the series’ original voice cast is set to reprise their roles for a reunion TV movie.
Said movie will air in 2018, and starts with Rocko, Heffer, and the other principal cast members returning to Earth after having been stranded in space since 1996. Understandably, not all of the characters adjust all that well to the many stark differences between 1996 Earth life and current day Earth life.
Rocko’s Modern Life is the third Nicktoon to recently be given a new lease on life, with a Hey Arnold reunion movie set to hit screens this fall, and an Invader Zim reunion special in the works as well. Nostalgia is a powerful thing, and Nickelodeon clearly plans to mine it for all it’s worth, when it comes to its old-school Nicktoon lineup.
