Rocket League Getting New Hockey-Inspired Mode Along with Mad Max and Portal Themed DLC

cWaqstg-1024x576.jpg

December is looking to be a fun month for fans of Rocket League as content will arrive at the beginning and the middle of the month. Developer Psyonix recently reported that both PC and PS4 players can expect Portal-themed items and Mad Max-themed “Chaos Run” DLC on December 1 before a hockey-inspired mode will be added on December 14.

According to a recent announcement by developer Psyonix, they have teamed up with Valve to bring players customization items including rocket trails, antenna, and a car topper all for free. The full list includes the following:

  • Cake (Topper)
  • Conversion Gel (Rocket Trail)
  • Propulsion Gel (Rocket Trail)
  • Repulsion Gel (Rocket Trail)
  • Aperture Laboratories (Antenna)
  • Cake Sticker (Antenna)
  • Companion Cube (Antenna)
  • Personality Core (Antenna)
  • PotatOS (Antenna)
These items will be achievable via post-match item drops whether players win or lose matches. “All you have to do is keep playing until the match ends and your chance to earn a new Aperture-themed goodie of your very own.”

In another recent statement, Psyonix also discussed Rocket League’s upcoming “Chaos Run” paid DLC. This will include the following items:

  • 2 New Battle-Cars, Ripper and Grog
  • 12 New Decals (six for each new Battle-Car)
  • 2 New Paint Types (Camo and Sun-Damaged)
  • 2 New Wheels (Ripper and Grog)
  • 2 New Rocket Trails (Sandstorm, Nuts and Bolts)
  • 3 New Toppers (Boombox, Cow Skull, Mohawk)
  • 3 New Antennas (Bomb Pole, Radioactive, Retro Ball – Wasteland)
  • 5 New Trophies
The DLC will be priced at “$3.99 (or its regional equivalent).” The DLC will also include a free, “non-regulation” arena titled Wasteland. Wasteland differentiates itself from other stadiums as it will be slightly wider, contained sloped terrain, and the boost placements will be completely different.

Lastly, but certainly not least, Rocket League will also be receiving the long-awaited new “hockey-inspired mutator mode” deemed “Snow Day” on December 14. In this mode, players will drive their vehicles on an ice field in an attempt to score a hockey puck rather than the game’s traditional ball. This addition will be free and also includes several “Winter Event” customization items:

  • “Xmas” Rocket Trail
  • “Blitzen” Topper
  • “Christmas Tree” Topper
  • “Sad Sapling” Topper
  • “Santa” Topper
  • “Candy Cane” Antenna
  • “Holiday Gift” Antenna
Developer Psyonix continues to frequently add downloadable content to Rocket League to both PS4 and PC versions. In recent conversations on Twitter, the developer has indicated that additional content continues to be in the works signifying that more may be on the way soon.

Since its release back in July of this year, many have proclaimed Psyonix’s addictive Rocket League as the “surprise hit of the year,” with the title seemingly coming out of nowhere but becoming one of the biggest success stories of 2015, as a new report from The Wall Street Journal shed a little more light on the game’s success.

In a report from The Wall Street Journal, Psyonix shared more details on Rocket League‘s success and, in particular, the studio’s more concerted efforts to raise awareness of the title based on the results of its predecessor, Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars, which originally released in 2008 on PS3 but failed to gather a significant audience.

Where SARPBC had a devoted fanbase but little-to-no-marketing, The Wall Street Journal‘s report detailed that Psyonix’s drive to raise awareness for the game certainly seems like it paid off, as Rocket League has “raked in nearly $50 million in revenue and amassed more than 8 million registered players” since releasing for PS4 and PC this past July.

In contrast, the game was made on a budget of “a little less than $2 million” over the course of two years, as Psyonix worked on it steadily between contract jobs on major AAA titles such as Mass Effect 3 and the Gears of War series.

The Wall Street Journal detailed that a major part of Psyonix’s strategy to bring awareness of Rocket League to a larger audience was to “get it into as many hands as possible,” with the game’s release through Sony’s PlayStation Plus service providing “millions” of downloads of the game to users, along with providing copies of the game to notable YouTube and Twitch personalities to help promote the title.

Rocket League is currently available on PS4 and PC, with the game to launch on Xbox One next year.
