It kind of irks me when people give all the props to marci when imo this is just comeback kid syndrome all over; with a long line of direct influence.

before roc it was sean price with his second career
Before price mf doom
Before doom kool keith
Before keith came back out wu tang/rza/gza restablished themselves

Griselda is like the next jay elect, both got on late influenced by all the guys above. The entire griselda sound and influence comes from above. Same for roc imo.

i see people guve marcberg props but its reloaded that really started the ug rappers alp copying. But there were ug guys already doing that style before roc marci so idk. For example, jay elect restablished the drumless shyt before roc yet roc gets the credit. Jay elect is a wutang stan and did the ghostface rap over an existing record that was drumless with eternal sunshine. That record started this trend, by way of wu/rza, not what roc is doing.
U missed the whole point. Roc made that shyt a style. Roc made it a whole lane. Roc gave it an aesthetic. Some cool shyt. U mad. But the nikkas u speaking on even credit Roc. Jay Elect ain’t even release enough material to usher shyt in. No one said Roc was the first nikka to rap over a drumless loop. That nikka is the person who made it a part of a movement tho. And the fukking producers will say it themselves. Alchemist has done drumless loops in 1999. Yet he STILL credit’s Roc. Doom wasn’t fly, Price wasn’t fly, Jay Elec wasn’t fly. Etc etc. Roc made that underground shyt FLY bruh. He made it cool. This nikka was talkin that Jay Z type shyt over underground aesthetic. Then went and sold vinyl and merch and put a price on that aesthetic. Roc deserves his credit.

Lmao. Who the fukk thinks the “new ug” “goon” rappers like ransom larry june griselda are “fly”? The fukk?

your exaggerating like crazy. Who thinks underground shyt is fly cept on here lmao?

These albums sell 10k and gone. theres barely any rappers super successful with the style in the first place. Reality is it spawned a whole bunch of throwaway shyt that dont last for a niche audience. It has little to no influence on the mainstream.

how did roc make it a lane when sean p just a couple years prior and every rapper i listed made it a lane before him. Roc applied the mf doom underground blueprint to sean p’s formula. You telling me roc dont do the random mf doom multi syllable rhyme style? We make fun of his shyt on here cuz its just random and has no direction just like doom shyt. Like i said, hes just next in line. Rapping that way over that style of production is NOTHING NEW. Pretending it is is what annoys me.

even you bringing up jay z? Jay z rhymed over this style what over 20 years ago? You just said it yaself. Jay z/ just blaze, people bringing up dear summer. Who produced jay elect? Just blaze. Jay elect exhibit c is the sound of the entire underground roc is ort of. THAT was mainstream. Jay elect had way more or a buzz than roc marci despite not dropping.

Its basically the purist hip hop branch of the genre… you can go back 30 years and find the same style of hip hop from a dozen plus artists. The whole production style is cuban linx/supreme clientele -> madvillainy -> donuts. Rza/dilla/madlib. Even alchemist changed his whole style up to blend in.

the whole vinyl and merch aestetic been underground hip hop since 1995. People just slept for a couple years and it felt new again. It wasnt.

All of this is useless. U just mad at reality. Lol. I can’t argue with nikkas mad at reality. And u can’t tell me shyt about vinyl and merch I was a DJ since the 90s I know the scene AND I know the difference. And when did I say anything about Griselda being fly?

He deserves a lot of credit but I do kinda wonder about the “cool” thing. His look was fly but for a long time it was nearly impossible for me to get someone into Roc shyt because of no drums and no bump in the whip. Some of his stuff just sounds…not good in a car. In that sense it was similar to DOOM in the sense that while the aesthetic was drastically different, it’s still shyt you play in your room when no women are present.

Everyone knows I’ve criticized the Griselda drums for years but at least they had more drums, and it could be played in the whip. Making their shyt way easier to introduce to that fan who grew up on 90s rap but doesn’t like anything new. Flip side you play a lot of Roc Marci for those people and they gonna laugh at you. In my experience at least…

But Roc was less like that during the Marcberg and Reloaded days. And Im speaking on the aesthetics of things. Not as far as getting a random person to feel him. Im speaking on just the optics of shyt. The shyt he speaks about in his raps. Roc sold the cool shyt. Foreign cars. Expensive clothes jewelry. He added humor. And was still on some gangsta shyt. He made underground not look dusty. He made the other underground nikkas feel like they could be they self and still be cool. Look at some of the shyt these nikkas was doing previous. Listen to the shyt Benny was doin. Roc opened the gates.

Who cares about that?

You think the reverse isn't true and underground fans don't laugh at what they listen to?

Roc and most underground artists are doing what they want to do. It's niche music not meant for the masses. You want drums look elsewhere.

The flyness isn't about his look it's about his subject matter. He talked fly street shyt. It wasn't just goon music.

There is no dispute that Roc changed the game. There wasn't a lane for fly underground street music that sounded like what he was doing. Go listen to the early music Griselda was making and look how their sound evolved after Marcberg and Reloaded. Roc made everyone realize they could make dusty street music and have a viable career without compromise.

His peers like Al, Griselda, etc always give him credit and even Jay recognized:

I didn’t even know Hov was plugged in to Marci since Reloaded.

He also listens to Mach Hommy and someone (I think Just Blaze) said he had him listening to MF DOOM.

Dr. Dre listen to Mach.

A lot of these mainstream guys still respect the craft so they listen to the underground. It would be nice if they said so publicly more often.

He’s wildly overrated on this site. $500 Ounces Alchemist beat is fukking FLAMES & Roc Marci verse was mid AF. He did not flow on that beat correct at all. He’s not that nice.

The Sacrifice by Roc Marciano

This came out 2013 I’m not believing this revisionist history about him birthing anybody. His flow is not good at all :skip:

https://music.apple.com/us/album/covid-cough/1542183115?i=1542183124

WTF is this? Trying to say he birthed the likes of Griselda and the rest of the upstate NY movement? Ain’t no way!
Roc Marci has the best verse on 500 Oouces.
