This is like a few clips from different shows spliced together. I'm surprised people consider it a real series. Part of the reason Macross rights were messed up for so long in the US.

you gotta give credit where it's due...they power rangers before power rangers...and the spliced series makes sense for the most part

They were 3 different shows fused into 1 big storyline. As a kid with no internet you just eat it up because you had no idea and there were cool fukking ships and robots fighting with awesome animation. And considering part 1 was Macross, one of the GOATs in mecha anime, of course people fell in love with it. Parts 2 and 3 were always confusing and a step down from 1 (again, for obvious reasons) so finding out Harmony Gold took two completely different series and just dubbed them to fit their narrative (and added some clips from Macross for flashbacks or callbacks) was :ohhh: and :mindblown: to anyone that followed and loved Robotech.

the great thing about this show is.

it prepares you as a child for what adults go through.
that i still wish it stayed consistently on tv.
as macross the opening saga, is must see tv for any and every child.
just like kiriku is recommended for every black person culturally.
yet robotech : macross..
is the must see thing.
every child should be exposed to at a very early age.
so i recommend macross.
if you have a child and you want to give them a gateway into maturity.
that just so happens to called anime.
yet back then...it was controversially titled:
japanimation

plus that controversial title reeks of the remnants of what vietnam was.
that the pc ideal of maturity...leads to japanimation..being condensed.
to a much better pc title of anime. which this series after voltron.
became obvious had higher gateway quality content and maturity.
which are and were not seen in regular domestic television.
in any incarnation of day to night time or prime time programming.

as macross takes you...
no thrust you into what being an adult is.
plus the added and needed maturity that you have to grow to.
to even think about growing older and being focused.

if not....you meet your demise.
even when you have circumstance.
beyound your complete control and full comprehension in that moment.

if you want...
you can avoid the other two series of the show.
which will happen naturally.
as the other tacked on series components.
that feature scott bernard and dana sterling.
have to be digest over time, of tolerance.
instead of sheer relevence.
yet the last series with scott bernard features.
arguably one of the goat heros in anything ever created in scott bernard.
although,..he pales in comparision to the evolution and maturation of rick hunter.
it still can be viewed..yet you will have to stomach..
just the offbrandness of the other two series.
[trust and scust,..it deals with offbrandness in the other series.]
yet macross is perfect, and there is no other perfect show.
i feel that has ever aired live or animated to rival.
just the level of maturation.
this series will give its viewers.

so you should on first watch..just focus on macross.
to enjoy the magic of what this show is.
as when we were kids....
i only know one kid who was that mature.
to be able to digest and understand the entire series hodge podged together.
it is similar to trying to view dairugger after go lion.

yet if you like after you enjoy go lion..
you can take a break and then go enjoy dairugger or vehicle voltron.
same here,....
as both series were that much more mature than anything aired on television.
let alone an actual cartoon.
that literally makes you mature as a child.
to understand the circumstances of war and politics.
plus having to execute..even when the outcome is not desired.
yet there exists only one outcome.

especially when embroiled in such a complex ideal as war.

for our generation and being threatened with war.
plus re-insertion of the draft.
as a possibility, in a time. removed from vietnam..yet the looming idea of war could arise.
plus how to best go about dealing with being thrust into war.

the first best thing about macross.
is the timeline it is set in.
as it picks up for our gen..with the idea that the future.
would be one that feature this type of innovation.
that of course has not happened.
yet when this series aired.....
the idea that this evolution and circumstances could occur.
held precedence, and drives the show.

so if you are viewing macross for the first time.
do not be critical of the dates of the show.
try to take yourself back to the idea.
of what a child in gen x would have seen and been headed to.
when this aired originally.

if you do that...it will help you as a noob viewer to get over the dates of the timeline.
as this series was made to make a domestic audience mature.
plus become aware and privy to what could be the outcome.
of the circumstances of war.
where no one asked for any of the variables that lead to the conflict arising.
plus socially what could arise in just natural normal life.
amidst such conflict and finding a balance.
when a resolution to this conflict may never exist.

that is how brilliant this show is.
that this is the recommend show of all time.
whether it is a movie or anime.
as it tackles what maturity into adult hood actually is.
plus the variables of life...to remain a good person is.
even when you are embroiled in actual unexplainable war and conflict.
you have also dually been thrust into.
while trying to navigate the idea of adulthood.
