Robert Guerrero: I'd Love To Fight Kell Brook in The UK!
Posted by: Rick Reeno on 8/22/2014 .

By Rick Reeno

Promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport has mentioned several possible names for Kell Brook's first defense of the IBF welterweight title. If everything goes according to plan, Brook (33-0, 22KOs) will return on December 6th in Sheffield.

Last weekend, Brook captured the IBF title with a twelve round majority decision over Shawn Porter at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

Former champion Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero (32-2-1, 18KOs) was one of several names mentioned by Hearn to challenge Brook in December.

BoxingScene.com spoke to Guerrero to get his thoughts on Brook's win, the possibility of facing Brook at the end of the year and other potential options.

BoxingScene.com: What were your thoughts on Kell Brook's win over Shawn Porter and the fight itself?

RG: I thought Kell Brook did a very good job of negating Porter's aggressive style. He used his jab very well to keep Porter at bay. He kept his composure throughout the fight which showed he's an experienced fighter. Brook proved he's one of the top fighters in the welterweight division. Porter should not be ashamed for losing. It was a close fight and Porter did some good things in there. I'm sure he'll learn a lot from this loss and bounce back. Losing a fight should not be the end of the world. A true champion will always bounce back and I believe Porter will do just that.

BoxingScene.com: Eddie Hearn, who promotes Brook, said you are one of the bigger names in the welterweight division. Would you entertain the thought of fighting Brook in the UK?

RG: I would love to go to the UK and fight Brook next. The fans out there are very passionate about their fighters and I think it would be a great fight. I fought Spend Abazi in Denmark and won a world title so I got experience fighting overseas. Fighting in England is something I've always wanted to do because they know there boxing in the UK. I got a lot of fans over there, it would be great. I'm ready to go!

BoxingScene.com: How about Guerrero against some of the other fighters in the division? There are plenty to choose from like Keith Thurman, and Amir Khan and several others.

RG: I'm always looking to fight the best guys out there. Thurman is a fight I like because I expect him to fight which is what I like, so I definitely want that fight. Amir Khan is an exciting fighter who has fast hands so that too would be a fight I would enjoy, being that it's a clash of styles. Guerrero vs. Danny Garcia is definitely a fight that has fireworks written all over it. I feel any fight that I'm in will be entertaining and the fans will win and that's what's important.

BoxingScene.com: When can we expect you back in the ring?

RG: I'm just waiting for my team to let me know when I'll be back. I've already started my CrossFit training and light boxing training with my pops. As soon as I get word on a date then I'll start picking it up and start sparring. Right now I'm just staying in shape getting ready for the call. I can't wait to get back in the ring. I'm excited for all these big fights in the welterweight division.

@Newzz you must be trolling. Guerrero is an average B - fighter a best in his best days and his best physical shape. He doesn't have the IQ or the power to beat Turman and Brook. I'd even pick Porter vs Ghost. Ghost beats Berto and got a fight with Floyd then he's acting like he's a top 5 fighter. Heck Ghost vs Broner at 145 would be exciting lol or Ghost vs Jose Sito Lopez. I don't take Ghost seriously at all.

I would like to watch all four fights, but I am not real high on Guerrero. Haven't been impressed from any fights I've watched.

Thurman - I think wins, boxes much better than Guerrero and hits hard.
Brook - Can box on the outside and showed vs. Porter he is physical enough to not be overwhelmed. Need to see Brook more, but technically I think he is more talented.
Khan - ahhh, reminds me of some of the best Khan matchups. From the outside he should be much more talented, but guys always find their way inside on Khan and Guerrero can do that. Khan hasn't proven to be nearly as good at keeping inside fighters offense turned down like Floyd. An aggressive Guerrero is trouble.
Garcia - a great fight. These guys would go toe to toe. Guerrero would be every bit as tough as Herrera. Make this fight!

I didnt say he WOULD beat them...I said I could see him beating all 4 of em:manny:

Keith Thurman hasnt fought anyone yet, so I cant say so surely that he would beat Robert Guerrero (who'd be easily the best opponent he ever got in the ring with), because we've never seen Thurman in the ring with a Top 15 Welterweight yet. And Kell Brook clinched/grabbed his way to victory over Shawn Porter instead of fighting on the inside. I wasnt really impressed with him, outside of his jab and outside work, but he cant fight on the inside and Guerrero can. Depending on the referee in the fight, Brook vs Guerrero is an intriguing fight that I can see Guerrero winning.

I'd even pick Porter vs Ghost.

Guerrero isnt calling out Porter though, and yes, Porter would beat him.

Ghost beats Berto and got a fight with Floyd then he's acting like he's a top 5 fighter. Heck Ghost vs Broner at 145 would be exciting lol or Ghost vs Jose Sito Lopez. I don't take Ghost seriously at all.

You dont have to take him serious, but in the ring you do. Guerrero is not a "walk in the park" fighter. He may not be elite, but he can cause trouble for all 4 of em including Khan and Garcia (which we didnt touch on). I can see him beating all 4 of em, but also losing to all 4 of em. I dont think ANY of those 4 are good enough to just make them a no brainer over Robert Guerrero:manny:

You say you wanna fight Thurman, but you you turned him down last December and said this summer that he had to basically jump through hoops to get a fight with you :mjpls:

Before it was jump to 154 and beat Lara. :mjpls:

After struggling with Taka Michinoku all of a sudden that tune changes.

Guerrero would be a tough match for all of them.
:childplease:
Sorry did I miss where Guerrero became an elite fighter? B/c he cracked the Berto shoulder roll? Won one round against floyd? He's a sloppy boxer with a high work rate and above average inside skills. Garcia wrecks him, Thurman wrecks him, Brook would outpoint him. Khan's the only W i see of this group

breh, you know having a tough fight and beating someone is 2 different things. Guerrero is a good matchup for all of em and possesses his own advantages over each of the fighters listed.

He can outwork Garcia and has faster hands and feet. Thurman has a lot less ring experience and never faced an opponent under the bright lights as good as Guerrero (Diego Chavez or Jesus Soto-Karass aint no damn Robert Guerrero). Brook cannot fight on the inside and Guerrero can fight pretty well on the inside. Khan's chin and activity against a Guerrero who will look to just brawl with him can get him in trouble.

Im not saying he wins all 4, but NONE of them would have a walk in the park with Robert Guerrero. All 4 would have to earn their victory.
