Promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport has mentioned several possible names for Kell Brook's first defense of the IBF welterweight title. If everything goes according to plan, Brook (33-0, 22KOs) will return on December 6th in Sheffield.
Last weekend, Brook captured the IBF title with a twelve round majority decision over Shawn Porter at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.
Former champion Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero (32-2-1, 18KOs) was one of several names mentioned by Hearn to challenge Brook in December.
BoxingScene.com spoke to Guerrero to get his thoughts on Brook's win, the possibility of facing Brook at the end of the year and other potential options.
BoxingScene.com: What were your thoughts on Kell Brook's win over Shawn Porter and the fight itself?
RG: I thought Kell Brook did a very good job of negating Porter's aggressive style. He used his jab very well to keep Porter at bay. He kept his composure throughout the fight which showed he's an experienced fighter. Brook proved he's one of the top fighters in the welterweight division. Porter should not be ashamed for losing. It was a close fight and Porter did some good things in there. I'm sure he'll learn a lot from this loss and bounce back. Losing a fight should not be the end of the world. A true champion will always bounce back and I believe Porter will do just that.
BoxingScene.com: Eddie Hearn, who promotes Brook, said you are one of the bigger names in the welterweight division. Would you entertain the thought of fighting Brook in the UK?
RG: I would love to go to the UK and fight Brook next. The fans out there are very passionate about their fighters and I think it would be a great fight. I fought Spend Abazi in Denmark and won a world title so I got experience fighting overseas. Fighting in England is something I've always wanted to do because they know there boxing in the UK. I got a lot of fans over there, it would be great. I'm ready to go!
BoxingScene.com: How about Guerrero against some of the other fighters in the division? There are plenty to choose from like Keith Thurman, and Amir Khan and several others.
RG: I'm always looking to fight the best guys out there. Thurman is a fight I like because I expect him to fight which is what I like, so I definitely want that fight. Amir Khan is an exciting fighter who has fast hands so that too would be a fight I would enjoy, being that it's a clash of styles. Guerrero vs. Danny Garcia is definitely a fight that has fireworks written all over it. I feel any fight that I'm in will be entertaining and the fans will win and that's what's important.
BoxingScene.com: When can we expect you back in the ring?
RG: I'm just waiting for my team to let me know when I'll be back. I've already started my CrossFit training and light boxing training with my pops. As soon as I get word on a date then I'll start picking it up and start sparring. Right now I'm just staying in shape getting ready for the call. I can't wait to get back in the ring. I'm excited for all these big fights in the welterweight division.
