For an Independent company, they make it back with ease. Comfortably. All revenue is theirs.

DVD purchases, rentals, netflix, cable TV feature/commericals etvc. That's just in America.

Movies that make losses are those who have a big budget, released to theaters and bomb. The budget is a big enough problem, but the costs of dealing with theaters and splitting any income so many ways is what kills it.

obviously the numbers aren't complete, but you see the trend

these are movies that will not see 11mill anytime soon off dvd and would have to get it through the other avenues you mentioned.

I don't think this 50 cent movie in particular will be popular enough to get significant cake from the other streams. I don't it being picked up by cable, rentals are way down. I guess netflix would help it out a lot.

well if it sells for roughly $20 a DVD then you sell 500,000 and your at $10M. You sell any more than 500,000 and you make a profit. That is if they sell at $20, Im not sure what DVDs go for noawadays...that's not even the digital rentals...I think its possible.
