A lot of what you said is valid, but I think the biggest for all the lack of respect and coverage has everything to do where they play in. New Jersey as a whole is considered by many as New York's redhead stepchild and one of most worthless states in America. Trust me, living in different states in college and in a short time in high school, Jersey isn't as much to others outside of it. Look at the Nets, in the NJ even in the Finals years, Nets were that second class team to the Knicks. They move the Brooklyn, everything wants Nets gear now, wears in proudly and they are seen as a real rival to the Knicks now. Trust me as a Newark native, it was nice to see the Devils to get a Cup run and to get the Draft in both NBA and NHL. Hopefully, Prudential Center continues to a sign of Newark's growth as a city
Back to the main discussion, I wish all the NY Metro teams get more talk on NY radio and TV, just to any discussion during the regular season is just pulling teeth. My main point is that some of the Devils fans hatred of the Rangers is misguided, the national media especially the people who don't see NJ as anything than NY's trash need to get more of the ire
It's a little brother, big brother thing combined with the fact that it's still a really young fanbase. The reason I hate the Rangers has much more to do with their fanbase than their actual squad and we know the relationship between the fanbases hasn't been cordial in a long time.
The move to Newark has helped the Devils overall. I live right outside of Newark and a lot more people I know are at least starting to follow the Devils that didn't give a damn about hockey before because the Devils are in Newark and it's the city's squad. Plus there's a lot more potential if they market the right way.
