shyt probably Tom Petty songs just off the mob movies and shows like miami vice and knight rider. They probably didn't know who he was, but they know the songs or have heard of them.

Then if you from up north like the mid west or the east coast or the wet coast. You ran into his songs cause they were played at games, on the classic radio stations, pop stations in the 80s too and at the beach.
Yup. And this isn't specifically about Petty, but thats one of the things I love about pre-2010's hip hop. If you study the samples, its so many fukking gems of all genres
to listen to. I'm POSITIVE Tom Petty got some cuts mixed in with songs we heard, and we never knew it was a Petty song. That said, he got hits on the level of
"I know the lyrics, but I don't know the song name or the artist." It's not like MJ, Prince, The Stones or some other group where you instantly know who made the song, but
you can bet that ass you bopped your head to one of his songs at some point. I'm not really a Petty fan(I haven't listened to much of his discography) but I am aware how big
he was even up to his death. The station I listen to even had him headlining a concert at the Rivinia a couple years ago. Them old dogs got loyal fans till death.
