Pneumonia is the leading infectious cause of death in children worldwide, killing more children than any other disease. In 2019, pneumonia killed 740,180 children under the age of five, which is 14% of all deaths in that age group. Pneumonia deaths are highest in sub-Saharan Africa and southern Asia.
