Backlund won it in '78 but held until December 26, 1983, so he had it the first 3 years of the '80s

Sheik wins it, holds it for 28 days then Hogan goes on his 4 year reign of '84 to '88

Then the whole Andre winning controversy leads to WM 4, Savage wins, holds for 371 days.

Hogan wins on April 2, 1989 (WM 5) and loses in on April 1, 1990 to Ultimate Warrior (WM 6)
