The ICC is performative. Not sure why y’all expect the US or any world power to actually care what they do.

It goes against a nation’s fundamental autonomy and they aren’t very successful.

In 22 years they’ve only managed 10 convictions and have had no sway on human rights abuses.

Further, both the US and Israel have said from jump they have no obligations to its oversight. Hence, why I’ve stressed numerous times it’s performative and meaningless here.

Dark fact, Sudan doesn’t recognize them either :manny:.

But somehow TikTok has convinced folks they’re going to do something of value here.

fukk you

I have also found this really interesting. Right or wrong over the years I've found people generally arguing against the ICC being used particularly in ktl/hl.

Were you aware that when al-Bashir visited South Africa(an ICC member) several years ago under ICC indictment South Africa refused to arrest him?

Not a lot of people seem interested in what is happening in Sudan on this forum. I wonder why.

And fukk you.

My impression is that the ICC is pretty toothless. I read a book a few years ago that wasn't non fiction, but a lot of the action took place at The Hague. Which doesn't make me an expert, but I learned a little before and after reading that book about The Hague/court.

I read this earlier and was stunned.

I wasn't. Is it new that Israel is flagrantly ignoring international laws and norms and feels like they can do whatever the fukk they want without consequences?

I mean, it's shocking behavior in the abstract, but it is completely in line with how they've rolled for Netanyahu's entire tenure.

"fundamental" autonomy? What could that even mean? Nationhood is an artificial and relatively recent construct that means different things to every culture, there's nothing "fundamental" about it except that which is agreed upon by international collaborations of nations.....and an international collaboration of nations set up the ICC.

Hence, why I’ve stressed numerous times it’s performative and meaningless here.

In the middle of a major internal war that Israel keeps claiming has existential consequences, and in the middle of a region where Israel claims they have enemies on every side, the Director of Mossad instead spent his personal time and energy focused on trying to stop this trial from happening. So it is obviously not "meaningless."

From the article - does any of this sound like the behavior of someone who thinks the court's actions are "meaningless"?

"The prosecutor’s decision to apply to the ICC’s pre-trial chamber for arrest warrants for Netanyahu and his defence minister, Yoav Gallant, alongside three Hamas leaders, is an outcome Israel’s military and political establishment has long feared."

"Cohen’s personal involvement in the operation against the ICC took place when he was the director of the Mossad. His activities were authorised at a high level and justified on the basis the court posed a threat of prosecutions against military personnel, according to a senior Israeli official. Another Israeli source briefed on the operation against Bensouda said the Mossad’s objective was to compromise the prosecutor or enlist her as someone who would cooperate with Israel’s demands."

"The Mossad also took a keen interest in Bensouda’s family members and obtained transcripts of secret recordings of her husband, according to two sources with direct knowledge of the situation. Israeli officials then attempted to use the material to discredit the prosecutor."

"multiple Israel intelligence agencies ran a covert “war” against the ICC for almost a decade."

"A source familiar with Bensouda’s accounts of the final two meetings with Cohen said he had raised questions about her security, and that of her family, in a manner that led her to believe he was threatening her. On one occasion, Cohen is said to have shown Bensouda copies of photographs of her husband, which were taken covertly when the couple were visiting London. On another, according to sources, Cohen suggested to the prosecutor that a decision to open a full investigation would be detrimental to her career.

Four sources familiar with the situation said it was around the same time that Bensouda and other ICC officials discovered that information was circulating among diplomatic channels relating to her husband, who worked as an international affairs consultant."

"Between 2019 and 2020, the Mossad had been actively seeking compromising information on the prosecutor and took an interest in her family members."

"Between 2019 and 2020, in an unprecedented decision, the Trump administration imposed visa restrictions and sanctions on the chief prosecutor. The move was in retaliation to Bensouda’s pursuit of a separate investigation into war crimes in Afghanistan, allegedly committed by the Taliban and both Afghan and US military personnel. However, Mike Pompeo, then US secretary of state, linked the sanctions package to the Palestine case. “It’s clear the ICC is only putting Israel in [its] crosshairs for nakedly political purposes,” he said. Months later, he accused Bensouda, without citing any evidence, of having “engaged in corrupt acts for her personal benefit”.

What does this have to do with the article?
