A WHITE candidate who tricked voters into believing he was black to win a local election is unapologetic about his deception.

"Every time a politician talks, he's out there deceiving voters," Dave Wilson, a conservative white Republican who ran for office in Houston, Texas, told the local K Houston TV station.

Wilson, whose tactics were labeled "disgusting" by opponents, sent out fliers to his overwhelmingly black Democrat constituency strongly implying he was black.

The fliers had on photos of smiling African-Americans and were captioned "Please vote for our friend and neighbour Dave Wilson."

One of the fliers referred to an endorsement from Ron Wilson, a name local voters were likely to associate with a former Houston state representative who is also black. In fact the endorsement came from Wilson’s cousin who lives in Iowa and shares the politician’s name.

The tactic worked and Wilson - an anti-gay activist who opponents call a "right-wing hate monger" – won election to the Houston Community College System.

Bruce Austin, the longtime Democrat incumbent pushed out by Wilson, said: "I don't think it's good for both democracy and the whole concept of fair play. But that was not his intent, apparently."

Did he really pretend to be black, or did he just use a picture of black people, and the black people fell for it?

This shows we aren’t researching candidates, and that is a problem. We can’t complain about wanting better government officials, and not vetting the ones running for office.

Ex-NPA candidate Alex Rodriguez will take plea, assist prosecution of Frank Artiles

The planned Aug. 30 trial start date will be pushed back due to the plea deal.
Alex Rodriguez, who prosecutors say ran a sham candidacy in last year’s razor-thin Senate District 37 contest, is set to take a plea deal and cooperate in the case against Frank Artiles.

Prosecutors charged Artiles with illegally funding Rodriguez’s bid against former Democratic Sen. José Javier Rodríguez, with whom the third-party candidate shares a last name. Then-Sen. Rodríguez lost the race to Republican candidate Ileana Garcia by just 32 votes. Alex Rodriguez, who ran with no party affiliation, pulled in nearly 6,400 votes.

That led to charges against Alex Rodriguez and Artiles. Thursday morning, NBC6’s Phil Prazan first reported that Rodriguez would agree to a plea and serve as a cooperating witness.

Ethics panel recommends maximum $20,000 fine for sham candidate in Miami Senate race

A state ethics panel has recommended that a no-party candidate be fined $20,000 and formally reprimanded by Gov. Ron DeSantis for violating campaign finance laws, which included accepting money from a Miami Republican operative prior to qualifying to run in a 2020 state Senate race. Alexis Pedro Rodriguez last week reached a settlement with the Florida Commission on Ethics, which found that he had filed inaccurate campaign documents with the state and accepted money from former Republican Sen. Frank Artiles with the understanding that he would change his party affiliation from Republican to no party to qualify to run in the Senate District 37 election.

The panel unanimously voted on the $20,000 fine — the maximum penalty for the two alleged violations — as well as public censure and reprimand for his violations. Rodriguez and Artiles are still facing criminal charges in connection to the alleged scheme, which Miami prosecutors say was intended to siphon votes from the Democrat incumbent in the race. The commission’s recommendation, if accepted by DeSantis, could mark the first time Rodriguez has been formally reprimanded for his role in the alleged election scheme, which one commissioner called one of the “most egregious” ethics cases in Florida.

The auto parts salesman who originally pleaded not guilty to criminal charges related to the scheme entered into a plea agreement in August, pleading guilty to two campaign finance charges and agreeing to help prosecutors in their case against Artiles, who is still awaiting trial in the criminal case related to the scheme. DeSantis’ office did not immediately respond to requests seeking comment on whether he intends to accept or reject the panel’s recommendation. The governor, who this year made election integrity issues a top legislative priority, has not commented on the case. The ethics panel originally rejected a $6,500 stipulation in August, and suggested a higher penalty. The maximum penalty is $10,000 per violation. “This is exactly the type of case where there aren’t innocent disclosures or mistakes,” ethics commissioner and former state Rep. Jim Waldman said. “That is the distinction .. it’s one thing to make an innocent mistake, it’s another to totally misrepresent things.” Rodriguez’s lawyer, Miami-based William Barzee, declined to comment on the panel’s decision.
