The downfall of R&B started with New Jack Swing. That was autotune before autotune.

Most of those New Jack Swing nikkas weren’t great singers, they just flowed to the beat and made a radio/club friendly hit. Or they downplayed their vocal skills to harmonize.

:mjlol:

I knew someone would say this I somewhat agree but the music was good at least now not so much lol.

I already know somebody’s gonna come in and say there’s plenty of good music out you just gotta dig
:heh:

I agree with that. But the problem is we shouldn’t have to dig for shyt. We, our parents our grandparents etc. never had to dig for talent becuz it was spoonfed to us
Different times, different circumstances.

and yes you did have to dig. If you liked hip hop and all you had was a half hour block of videos on MTV or Video Music Box, you had to dig the rest of the time. When Soul Train wasn’t on, you were digging. Recording videos, dubbing tapes, borrowing cassettes. Oh you dug alright. You’re just tired of doing it since the tastes of the general public don’t align with yours anymore.

Of course I had to dig for hip hop but we talking R&B which was king for a loooong time. All we had to do was simply turn on the radio. It has nothing to do with personal taste. Good music is good music no matter what the era is

And now all you gotta do is go on Pandora or Sirius XM. The stuff you want is there. There’s just new routes to get them and people hate change. Radio stations out here only serving top 40, AC, hip-hop /R&B and Christian stuff. They’ve all but killed off pure R&B and Rock stations to where they’re just online. Just the way it is now

Yes it definetly created a lane for the mediocre singers to rack up hits (Pebbles/Bobby Brown etc )but NJS also had it's fair share of great singers who either couldnt get it poppin too.

It’s not that New Jack Swing was garbage music (at least the good stuff, Milli Vanilli was able eat in the late ‘80s).:lolbron:

The NJS era produced some classics, but the real problem though is trying to blend R&B and Hip Hop which ends up b*stardizing both genres. That shyt started with NJS and and carried into the ‘90s with Bad Boy, Montell Jordan, Adina Howard, etc..

By the early 2000s, you had rappers like Nelly and Ja Rule “singing” their own hooks and R&B singers like Jagged Edge doing that sing-rapping bullshyt. :mjlol:

This is what R&B was sounding like in the early 2000s:

This shyt ain’t R&B or Hip Hop. It’s some kind of homogenized mishmash. And this shyt pre-dates autotune.

....
he reintroduced a way for subpar vocalist to add melody back into their lyrics

rap/hip-hop lyrically connects with people more & when measured against r&b lyrics it makes r&b look corny

i always say the final.form of an artist would be elite vocals with elite bars

once more rappers turnt sangers it was over because rap/hip-hop has the characters that the world gravitates towards

*
Elite vocals with elite bars is called Neo soul

Nah, there's tons of talk sexy not singing nikkas in Neosoul.
Maybe that was the intent, but the reality is, where's the voices?

And not for nothing, the industry itself has largely turned it's back on big BLACK voices. The production cycle right now isn't conducive to these talents.
