CLASSIC.

i was 14 and heavy into my underground-i-hate-mainstream phase. I used to listen to the wake up show radio program every friday night, with my finger on the record button at the ready.

Sway and Tech were hyping up the world premier of Nas Is Like all throughout the night before DJ revolution dropped it. They were saying sht like "Nas is back"...."no shiny suit is here, this that real stuff". Had us all salivating.

Finally DJ Revolution starts to spin it. First he just kept scratching that initial breakbeat and bells for what seemed like an hour....I know everyone listening was like 'cmon man!!'. DJ Rev finally gets over himself, and lets it go.

Initially I didnt know how to receive it, but once Nas spit that "...line em up with the stars/ tarot card you can see the pharaoh Nas" line, I was IN! Just an incredible song, and I feel blessed to have been a part of that moment. GOAT.

Damn, souds dope! Would like to hear that!

The fact that this was a SINGLE is amazing when you think about the landscape of Hip Hop nowadays..This was Hip Hop in its rawest form..Dope beat by Preemo & dope lyrics by Nas :wow:

Nas fukking ascended on all 3 verses on this :ahh:

Lyrically the best single ever imo :banderas:
A hook with nothing but record scratches
Those times :mjcry:

Still, most artists put out a commercial track for their lead single, most shoot a video for the most radio friendly track. They might do a low budget video for their street single too. Nas though, it's pretty much a given that his singles will be one of the two street tracks on his album. Probably hurts his sales a bit, but can't deny his integrity.

well the "hate me now" video premiered just 3-4 weeks later, and "nas is like" immediately took a backseat. plus that r.kelly video was out at the same time as well, iirc.

lets not act like nas is M.O.P. or somebody.

:pachaha: Well he's definitely no M.O.P., but he did gravitate towards a more commercial sound during the Bad Boy/Death Row era. Even after that era passed, he still features a street single as opposed to a blatant attempt at radio play.

On another note, I wish he'd drop something soon. Something, anything. Feel like Arizona out here. :martin:
